2002 Ford Fusion 2 1.4 petrol from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Typical early 2000's pretentious car

Faults:

Quite a lot, coolant leaks, oil leaks, dash board lifted/rattled, gearbox trouble, alternator failed, etc.

General Comments:

This was the family car we had a long while ago. My father only kept it because my mother loved it (she was into quirky weird cars), but it really was an oddball.

As most manufacturers in the early 2000's were trying to be cool and hip with cars out of the ordinary, this Fusion is a great example of that. It doesn't know whether it is a hatchback or a small soft roader. It looks like every car typical of the time - bold lines, square panels rounded off around the headlights. Such an odd design.

Inside was no better, plastic everywhere, seats were OK and the car was generally comfortable for family use, so they got that right, but everything else was weird.

It was handed down to me later in life and I hated driving it, slow and barely managed 40 mpg, terrible for a 1.4 engine.

So yeah it was just rubbish, I sold it in 2016, not a car I would buy again.

Would you buy another car from this manufacturer? No

Doesn’t sound like the car was taken very good care of. Leaky hoses should be spotted during oil changes by any mechanic who is actually doing an inspection & not just filling out an inspection report & saying they did. Never should have been a problem unless the mechanic was incompetent or the car didn’t get serviced regularly.

Are saying it was some radiator hose causing the coolant leak? For all we know it could have been the radiator itself.

I’m saying for a car which is as old as this one was (more than 10 years old for a decent chunk of the ownership time frame), it’s not uncommon to need to replace hoses, belts, etc preventatively. That tends to prevent leaks, belts snapping/shredding, & other problems before they even happen. The rubber & plastic that go into those types of parts do not hold up well.

Agreed, there are other sources for coolant leaks including the radiator like you said. Also could be a water pump, different gaskets or a heater core (where coolant collects on the passenger floor board). Hoses aren't that common on this model compared to a Telstar.
