And what "new slick model' was that? 1979 was a carryover year for all Buick models except the redesigned Riviera which was Motortrend car of the year.

10th Jan 2022, 19:58

Really? What "pretty slick new model" did Buick release in 1979? (and don't say "Lucerne"; that joke is played).

Unlikely that anyone who wanted the all-new Mustang in 1979 would have settled instead for a Buick Skyhawk either.

11th Jan 2022, 19:50

I would take the turbo Regal or Century 2 door over the Mustang.

12th Jan 2022, 01:09

Buick made the 455 GS Stage 1. GSX early 70s. Later Grand Nationals.

12th Jan 2022, 04:32

Are you the Lucerne commenter? You are bringing it up before anyone else does.

12th Jan 2022, 18:31

And that has nothing to do with 1979.

12th Jan 2022, 19:48

Pick a commenter number. And anyway what’s the difference?

13th Jan 2022, 04:48

Interesting choices. There was also a 79 LeSabre sport coupe with the turbo option. A nice rare find.

14th Jan 2022, 03:18

Well we have 19:58 saying there was a Lucerne. Guess Buick was busy that year.

14th Jan 2022, 16:14

I’d pass on most all 1979 cars. Wait for the Fox body 5.0 V8 Mustangs. Performance, well made, and had plenty of endless reasonable upgrades and parts support. I was driving a 77 Celica GT that even looked like a Mustang. Not fast but a reliable pretty car. Skipped over 79, 80, 81, and bought a loaded 82 Datsun 280zx which was flawless. Then a Legend. Foreign cars. But back to American to the late 90s. Some of that disco era had some poor choices. Underpowered, smog devices and poor gas mileage.

14th Jan 2022, 23:21

Then there is 18:57 claiming that in 1979 there was a slick all new Buick model and yet they still haven't replied about what model they are actually talking about.

15th Jan 2022, 21:29

Try reading 19:58 again.

17th Jan 2022, 03:34

He’s probably talking about the Regal Turbo or Riviera Turbo. I’m not that fascinated with an insistent reply. I did like Buick’s approach on muscle cars combined with luxury late 60s pre 73 however. Even building their own engine. But this is a Mustang review. Our family has owned 4 to date. So not merely an armchair discussion.

17th Jan 2022, 21:41

So what if this is a Mustang review. The late 70s - early to mid 80s turbo Regal / Grand National / and Regal "T" type were performance cars just like the Mustang. So yeah it is relevant to mention certain Buick models on a Mustang review, especially when all the turbo Regal cars towards the end of their run blew the doors off the Mustang amongst other American performance cars.

18th Jan 2022, 21:53

I will tell my son and see if he wants to sell his 93-95 Mustang GT’s for a 80s Turbo Buick. Anticipate a shake of the head. It’s so easy to modify a Mustang GT 5.0; plentiful reasonable parts without going to turbo or supercharging. Strong club support, sell old parts on eBay, and find some others to upgrade. Added 100 shot nitrous. Later built a 66 with a 95 drivetrain. Best bang per buck. And you can get a convertible to add with the coupes. So many directions you can go with one. Let’s hear your Buick mods on yours.

19th Jan 2022, 18:11

Don't need to "mod" a Turbo Buick on topic. Again even stock they will blow the doors off a Mustang.

21st Jan 2022, 00:30

Umm, you have that backwards actually.

21st Jan 2022, 03:52

If it was the other way around, and your son owned a Buick GN, you would have the same support and pride as you do with him owning Mustangs.

21st Jan 2022, 20:04

No, not necessarily unless you're referring to the newer Mustang (which you probably are).

But the fox bodies from the same era (that the other guy is praising) with the push rod 5.0 don't come close to the performance of the turbo 3.8 SFI v6 model Regals. These cars were faster than the Corvette from the time which also outperformed the Mustang.

Ford's Fastest Mustangs Ranked.

2013 Shelby GT500. The 2013 Shelby GT500 has a 5.8-liter, V8 engine with 662 HP, the most horsepower ever produced in the US.

2016 Shelby GT350.

2012 Mustang Boss 302.

2011 GT California Special.

2007 Shelby GT500.

2000 Mustang SVT Cobra R.

2003 SVT Mustang Cobra.

2008 Mustang Bullitt.

Still waiting on the Buick Turbo year, make and drivetrain that can blow the doors off. This is a Mustang Review. Let’s keep it stock like this list. Wish Carroll Shelby was alive to read this one. Saying nicely. Good luck.

22nd Jan 2022, 20:05

There you go again, like on other threads changing the subject when the topic was comparing performance cars from the EIGHTIES. Go back and reread previous comments.

So anyways the 86 - 87 T type and GN were the fastest cars of those years and one of the fastest from the whole decade including imports and domestic, leaving most competition from the time in the rear view mirror. Didn't need any luck with those. Then there was the 87 GNX with some added goodies. All these special Regals outperformed any Mustang from the time, including the early nineties which you seem so fond of just because your son owns them.

22nd Jan 2022, 22:08

Exactly. Let’s wait for the other commenter to tell us which Buick blows the doors off these.

22nd Jan 2022, 22:49

Sorry, but the most horsepower produced in the US was the 2018 Dodge Challenger SRT Demon rated around 840.

23rd Jan 2022, 04:00

Read 21:41 again. They clearly are balancing the differences on both cars being from the same era (the 1980s). And if you need to be informed on what years, make and drivetrains that outperformed a Mustangs from the entire 1980s decade; that would be 1986-1987 Regal T type or Grand National with the intercooled 231 3.8 litre turbo V6.

Save your list of Mustangs for other cars that actually competed from the post 2000s.
