1997 Geo Prizm LSi 1.8 from North America

Summary:

One of the two best cars I ever owned

Faults:

Possibly needed plug wires (?) The car would cough in wet conditions.

That. Is/Was. It.

General Comments:

This was an excellent $2k car. Was... it was sandwiched by a careless (expletive deleted) in an X-Terra.

Even then, it did its job well. It crumpled where it was supposed to. The 14 year old air bags deployed as designed. The driver, my daughter, emerged 99% unscathed.

While it was running... It had more than adequate acceleration. As an LSi, it had many bells and whistles.

It even appeared in a movie.

Would I buy another? Absolutely. I'm back to searching after this post.

1997 Geo Prizm LX 1.8 from North America

Summary:

Reliable value

Faults:

Shortly after I purchased the car, the rear driver's side door would no longer shut. I attempted to fix this myself, but needed to have it repaired at the shop.

Other than that, I have only had basic maintenance done, tires, brakes, exhaust, and thermostat. I also recently had to replace the serpentine belt. Nothing other than general maintenance.

General Comments:

This car is just reliable. I live in Western NY and drive 60 miles a day for work, and it always goes. I only paid $1200 for it, and I know I will never get a deal like this again.

The car has good heat and A/C. The factory stereo system works great. The only feature lacking is an intermittent wiper speed.

Also, this car is a bear to tune up yourself.

1997 Geo Prizm LSi 1.6 gasoline from North America

Summary:

Awesome

Faults:

Some rust, which is normal for cars up here due to salt etc.

Bought it with a crack in the manifold, hasn't gotten worse.

Exhaust system/ pipes need to be replaced.

I also bought it with no rear passenger side door handle, and the back doorhandles don't work very well...

General Comments:

Really great car. Very reliable. Has power, great for driving around town. Great car for the price, and I have only put $100 into it for an inspection and a new pipe.

Is this Prizm your first car?

1997 Geo Prizm LSI 1.6 from North America

Summary:

A wise economical auto purchase

Faults:

Clutch.

Needed a lot of brake work. It had all original parts, except pads.

General Comments:

Outstanding gas mileage. I average 34 mpg city/ highway. Manual transmission makes it peppy enough for me. Handles very well and is very solidly built.

1997 Geo Prizm LSI 4 cylinder from North America

Summary:

The Millennium Falcon of cars - not much to look at, but she's got it where it counts

Faults:

This car is amazing. Nothing went wrong with the car until it was 11 years old and even then it has been minor stuff - that's pretty darn good if you ask me!

I did routine maintenance, brakes, tires, etc. and up until this year that was all there was to it.

After passing the 11 year mark, the AC/Heat started to get weaker, and I haven't bothered repairing it.

The power steering fluid hose had to be replaced - only $152.

There is a small gap somewhere in the drivers' side door that leaks when it rains, and my driver's side lock won't unlock from the outside.

But all in all, I'd say that's a pretty great track record for 11 years!

General Comments:

My car was originally a rental, so it's pretty basic - no power locks or windows.

The sound system is basic, but the sound quality is pretty awesome - better than my husband's newer car.

It gets fantastic gas mileage, which is a definite plus in this day and age.

It has great pickup for a 4 cylinder, and aside from being a little loud on the roads (wind, engine - not much in the way of soundproofing the cabin) it is great for long road trips.

It is big enough to make you feel safe in it, and small enough to get into the good parking spaces. And it's purple.
