1995 GMC Safari LX 4.3L vortec V6 from North America

Faults:

Air conditioning compressor (twice)

Anti-Lock brake failure

Windshield Wiper control module failure.

General Comments:

I generally tolerate American cars small problems, and make the appropriate repairs, this van stands out of a major failure of General Motors to address their responsibility. The windshield wiper control module was a recall for many of their vehicles, but not this one even though this model had a problem. This nearly killed my family when the wipers stopped on a freeway during a rainstorm. The problems with the brakes caused two rear end accidents, and some injuries, and the dealers just diverted their eyes, and said that they had no way to repair this problem. I know it would have been costly to acknowledge this problem, buy it could have saved lives, and in the end helped GM's credibility and bottom line.

Very poor job GM!

1995 GMC Safari SLT V6 4.3L Vortex from North America

Summary:

Very reliable, long suffering vehicle

Faults:

Replaced heater blower motor, under warranty (30,000 miles).

Replace rear door stop clips, under warranty (30,000 miles).

Replace ERG valve, 150,000 miles, about $150, my labor. (First time it went bad, I simply cleaned it, couldn't the second time.)

Replace water pump and thermostat, 175,000 miles, about $100, my labor.

Replace head gaskets because of a coolant leak, 190,000 miles, $100, my labor. (This was probably because the water pump went out (see above, at 175,000 miles), it did over heat. Also incurred a $50 expense when I broke a plastic wire clip inside the upper air intake manifold, that's life.)

Has a bad gear shift mechanism in the steering column, but I'm living with it. It looks like it was vandalized before I got it. It got worse as the miles went up.

Sliding door sticks in the winter/cold.

General Comments:

God has blessed us with a very reliable, excellent vehicle. We're getting close to putting 200,000 miles on this truck, plus the 29,000 it already had. Can't complain.

It still has very good power.

It still rides smooth and is comfortable to drive. Although, it needs to have the shocks replaced soon.

Other than the head gaskets, haven't had anything major go wrong with the engine or transmission.

1995 GMC Safari SLT 6 cylinder from North America

Summary:

A great family hauler

Faults:

I purchased my safari mini-van new in 1995. I have been quite happy with it until now.

When I reached 102,000 miles the following went bad:

Anti-lock light came on.$1500.00 to repair.

Rear door will not open, I guess the hinge is out of line. Removed the middle row so I could store my packages.

General Comments:

With regular maintenance I was hoping to get at least 15 years before shelling out money this type of money.

1995 GMC Safari 4.3 liter V6 from North America

Summary:

Good overall vehicle

Faults:

Until now everything has just been normal wear. Brakes, shocks, filters, only one set of tires. The best one we have ever had. Until now.

The Idler arm on the right side has been pulled right out of the frame along with the bolts and backing plate, which is all still securely mounted on the idler arm now just hanging on the steering linkage. There is now a 1 inch by 3.5 inch square hole in the frame where the idler arm should bolt on.

General Comments:

We like the Safari very much. It meets all our needs, but now I am very nervous about ever driving it again.
