1988 Honda Civic 1.3 from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Old, slow, but completely bullet proof

Faults:

Not mechanical faults in the time I had it.

Bad fuel consumption, even for a small engine.

Pretty rubbish acceleration and top speed.

General Comments:

This car although ridiculously old and in all honesty, a bit rubbish, was just bullet proof.

I bought it for a mere 200 quid with 6 months tax and ticket, as a cheap runaround to get me out of a tight spot for a bit.

It served me reliably and without fault for a little under a year. It was even rear ended by some silly beggar in a Golf, but I just duct-taped the bumper back on and that was that.

The little automatic engine was lacking in horses, and drank more fuel that was expected for a 1.3, but it was tough and never missed a beat. On the coldest, wettest mornings, it would start first time. Even after sitting for a week, it snapped into action at the turn of the key like a little trooper.

The interior was 80's blue all over, but fitted the purpose and everything worked.

Though slow and old, this car was so reliable and easy to drive.

1988 Honda Civic Wagon (FWD) 1.5 from North America

Summary:

Perhaps the finest car ever built

Faults:

Routine maintenance.

Occasional exhaust work (expensive in these cars).

Routine electrical including alternator and battery

Typical Honda Wagon rust around the wheel wells.

Only 1 minor tune-up!

General Comments:

This car has done our family extremely well. Very roomy for such a small car (big enough for my wife and I to do road trips with my twins in the back seat).

Excellent gas mileage, on par with many of the most efficient modern small cars. This car has never broken down in my 7 years of ownership. It is not unusual for these cars to reach 400000 KM or more. Few cars built today will ever accomplish that.

Even if I get a newer vehicle, I will hold on to this one until it goes no more - long after the first manned mission to Mars.

This Honda is more refined than my 1992 Corolla wagon, and certainly more peppy.

1988 Honda Civic LX 1.5 from North America

Summary:

Amazing and stunningly reliable, economical car that won't let you down

Faults:

Leaking coolant at 310,000km, a simple fix by replacing one of the tubes.

General Comments:

This is by far the best and most reliable car I have ever owned.

We're currently touring Canada and the States, and we wanted a cheap and reliable car that we was cheap enough so we wouldn't mind dumping it at the end. In this respect, we've been pleasantly surprised at both reliability, comfort, ability and economy of the car.

We've been in the Canadian Rockies in -30 degrees and through Death Valley in 108 degrees, the car has started first time and every time. Snow, sand, ice hasn't fazed the car and we've been through conditions I would normally find testing in my 4wd. (Snow tires and chains were also a good investment)

Lack of air conditioning meant Death Valley was a little "uncomfortable", but a $3 cooler full of ice was a quick and simple fix!

Amazing little car and has totally changed my opinion of Honda. When we return to Australia, I'm looking for a Honda.

1988 Honda Civic LX 1.5 SOHC from North America

Summary:

Great car and was just fun to drive

Faults:

No problems with car. It was 20 years old but ran great. The heat didn't work but I bought it like that. And since it was spring/summer I never replaced the heater blower. It died out once and that was because I left the lights on. Other than that, the car was good. There was rust on a quarter panel but it was less than an inch big. Couldn't even notice it.

General Comments:

Great gas mileage. Good thing because gas was over $4 a gallon. I could put $15 in and last all week, driving it everyday back and forth to work.

I had some 2000 Si wheels, tinted windows, lowered, mugen steering wheel, Aem intake, and window visors. Car was old but looked really good.
