1996 Honda Civic LX 2.1 from North America

Summary:

Over all, a good little car, but not perfect

Faults:

Check engine light came on all the time (every 10,000 miles or so) in the first 90,000 miles. There was always something weird with emission-related type items, oxygen sensor, and even the exhaust manifold was cracked (making ticking sound). However, none of these things affected the car's performance as far as day to day driving and reliability. The good news is that we kept getting stuff in the mail from Honda saying the coverage for this or that "was extended due to California Emissions... " or some other strange reason. Bottom line is that most of it was covered, including the manifold at 60,000 miles, and other stuff up to 90,000 miles (we never bought an extended warranty). CV joint went bad at 110,000 miles, and the other one at about 130,000 miles. But we had driven a bunch of gravel roads out here in Wyoming which I'm sure contributed along with snow and ice.

General Comments:

I've listed a lot of things that have happened with the car. But I can assure you that I would definitely buy another one in a heartbeat! It has never, ever let us down as far as breaking down, being stranded, etc. Things that went wrong were more of an annoyance than an inconvenience. And, believe it or not, it is a great car in the snow. Cruises right though 6" of snow like a knife through butter.

1996 Honda Civic LX Std? from North America

Summary:

Super-reliable and well made small car

Faults:

Nothing has gone wrong except replacing batteries, filters, etc.

General Comments:

This is a very reliable car. Not the most powerful, but then again it's a small car to begin with. The engine is a bit loud, but it's my wife's car and I don't think she's ever had the transmission fluid flushed. I've heard that it's a good idea to flush the transmission fluid on Honda's (instead of just draining + replacing).

Regarding handling: It corners well, especially for its size. It's starting to wiggle a bit at 70+ mph, but not much.

Nothing has gone wrong with the body or electrical system.

1996 Honda Civic CX 1.8 DOHC from North America

Summary:

A yellow rice rocket with power to back it up

Faults:

Well a stock civic H/B sucks so I put a B18B out of a 1998 Integra in and I will just say: Watch out 5.0 Rustangs.

General Comments:

This car with stock trim ran a 18 sec 1/4 miles after the motor swap it hit 14.23 and then I installed a T3/T4 hybrid turbo running 12psi and hit 12.28 so stock honda suck, but add a little of its Acura powerplant power and you have a great street car.

1996 Honda Civic LSi Coupe 1.6 from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Between fuel consumption, and reliability it's one of the cheapest cars I have owned.

Faults:

The electric window went on the drivers side. I'm told this is a common fault. The rubbers slides become dry when the car is about six years old and put a greater strain on the motor. The local Honda dealer fixed this the following day including new rubbers for £105.00.

The only other faults apart from that were the exhaust and the battery. Both acceptable on a car over six years old.

General Comments:

Every moving part of the car seemed to look and work as it did the day it came out the show room. There was a feeling of quality unexpected in a relatively cheap car.

It was also deceptively fast in a straight line. However trying to go round a corner at speed was not advisable. The car was well balanced, but the tires were skinny and any grip they did give would force you to hang on to the steering wheel with white knuckles as the seats provided almost no side support.

1996 Honda Civic Vti Coupe 1.6 SOHC VTEC D16Y from Australia and New Zealand

Summary:

This car is the best thing I will probably ever buy, when it comes value for money

Faults:

Power windows have recently came out of alignment and popped off tracks and wouldn't go up. Dealer fixed promptly with no charge.

No other problems.

General Comments:

This car still drives like a dream, and as you can guess is still in excellent condition. I have never had a mechanical problem in 7 years, no body problems have evolved either.

Though I wasn't to impressed with the spare being nothing more than a rubber band on a coin.
