1997 Honda Civic DX 1.6 from North America

Summary:

If this car was any tougher it would be a tractor!

Faults:

I had the alternator replaced at about 120,000 miles.

Replaced the original plugs, wires and distributor cap at 154,000 miles.

General Comments:

I bought this car as a stop gap replacement for the Chevy S-10 pile that I sold. Hadn't planned to keep this car more than a year since it had been badly abused before I got it. It was just intended to be cheap transportation until I found something nicer.

Well the car quickly grew on me. Got so attached to it my kids and I even named it Sugar Ray (after the boxer) since it looked like it had been through a few fights. The name really suits this car since it just won't give up.

160,000 on the clock now and it averages 34 mpg. Never misses a lick. I replaced a pickup with this car and have used it very much like a truck. Fold down the back seat to haul lumber, no problem. Throw a greasy transmission in the trunk, easy. Basically, I beat the heck out of this car and it just keeps going.

It's quite worn and it shows. Must have been hit in the rear at some point. The trunk doesn't seal well and usually has a puddle in it when it rains. It had been a smokers car and the interior has a number of burns and stains. The body is dinged from front to back. That being said, I've never had a car that has been this low maintenance. I drive a lot and this car has racked up the miles since I bought it with very few issues.

I've just bought a replacement for Ray. My kids are growing and I need a four door. Really hate to see him go, but I guess it's time.

1997 Honda Civic Vi 1.5 VTec from Cyprus

Summary:

Brilliant and totally economical

Faults:

Honestly, absolutely nothing has gone wrong with this car.

All you have to do is service it on time and not even that!

Parts here in Cyprus are fairly cheap for Japanese cars, and it's all worth it.

General Comments:

For a 1.5L it's a car that picks up speed quite quickly. As for power, it's a brilliant 1.5.

Slightly more comfortable seats would have been a bonus, but they aren't so bad..

Dashboard resembles far newer cars.

I picked it up for CYP8000 at 2000km on the clock, and now with 120,000kms, it still goes for CYP3500-4000.

(CYP Cyprus Pound = 0.59 cents to 1 Euro.)

1997 Honda Civic DX 1.6L D16Y7 w/ D16Y8 Vtec head swap from North America

Summary:

Fun and reliable car

Faults:

Windows came off the tracks. Easy fix though.

Transmission and clutch replacement at 100k miles (previous owner was hard on the car)

General Comments:

Great car overall. Great on gas mileage and cheap on maintenance.

Performance upgrades are relatively cheap. D16Y7 non-Vtec head swap with a D16Y8 Vtec gave a decent power increase and (obviously) Vtec for only $300 (if you know where to shop).

I've driven this car across the country multiple times (2500+ mile trips) without any problems.

My Civic is heavily modded, but even on a stock setup it's a great reliable car.

The only weak-point engine wise on the vehicle are the connecting rods. If you intend to turbo or supercharge your civic beyond 260HP I'd suggest replacing the rods with something stronger.

1997 Honda Civic EL 1.3 from Australia and New Zealand

Summary:

Good and economical

Faults:

Nothings wrong with this car... perfect, but the seat feels made from scraps.

General Comments:

Civic is very well known, and it has a light weight.

The engine 1.3 liter is too small, but with a manual transmission it's fine, and comfortable for inner city travel.

Honda manual clutch is very soft.

1997 Honda Civic LX 1.4 liter I-4 from North America

Summary:

Adequately great

Faults:

The sealant lining the driver-side headlight came unglued, thereby letting water into the headlight.

Original windshield wipers replaced because they did left glaring water streaks.

The brake-blocks (I do not know the exact term) wore out and cracked at about 60,000 miles.

General Comments:

The car is perfect for commuting within town or city, however it is not recommended to drive on long distances.

The seats are adequate enough, but not completely comfortable--it's a economy car, what do you expect?

The 106-horsepower engine is sufficient, and I supposedly get 29 city, 35 highway. Acceleration varies for me at times; sometimes I go quickly, other times I lag very much and do not get any burst in speed for five or so seconds. Nonetheless, it gets the job down without having excessive power.

The car's cabin is pleasant, ergonomic, simple. I have beige cloth with dark-tan and black dashboard and center console, and cleaning it (whether vacuum or wet cloth) is easy.

Trunk space is more than adequate I feel. The folding-down seats are very helpful when putting a bike in the car (though I've been semi-successful with that in the first place).

Going 70 mph or more makes the steering wheel vibrate uncontrollably. By 90, my hands and arms are amusingly shaking.
