1988 Honda CRX HF review from North America

"Beautiful design, reliability, and a classic appeal"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

The arms holding up the hatchback have given out - so I have to have a stick in the trunk to hold the hatch open. Also, since new, the fuel guage has never read properly. It reads empty, or below (!!) but I still have 1/4 tank. Since the car gets 50 MPG most days, this has never been a real worry - just an annoyance.

General comments?

I love this car! I got it new in High School and have had it ever since. It has NEVER broken down in the 15 years I have owned it (no kidding.)

It has nice torque off the line, but as it is tuned for fuel economy it has less go passing on the highway. The handling is great - direct steering feel and with upgraded rims (14") the car sticks to the road.

It still looks like a current design, which I find remarkable from a 1988 car.

It is a little buzzy on the highway, and the HF has no trunk cover, so don't leave unsecured items in the back!

I see the seats starting to wear in the shoulders, which is a design flaw. All CRX seats wear through there. I'll end up with seat covers.

This car is a cult car now, and will end up a classic. If you are reading this because you are thinking of buying a CRX, I say go for it! You will probably be swapping in a new engine at this point, but if you find a low mileage HF, I recommend it! I know, everyone would rather have an Si motor, but beleive me, the HF is reliable, and LOTS of fun. The car weighs only 1900lbs! Even with less hp it koves out.
