2000 Honda S2000 2.0 Vtec from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Buy one - you'll love it

Faults:

Engine warning light came on, this turned out to be a loose connection on the throttle position sensor.

General Comments:

Starting with the bad points there are a few things to look out for with this car, these points apply only to pre 2001 cars, Honda rectified these problems in later models. Firstly when driving with the roof up there is a lot of wind noise, this is almost certainly the roof strikers are worn, a common problem that can be easily fixed for £54 for parts. Next, on decelerating between 2.5 and 4.5 thousand RPM a rattle noise occurs, on the early cars this is known to be broken springs in the clutch plate rattling, it will not effect the life of the clutch and is bearable, kind of like a characterisitic of the car. Finally the alloy wheels corrode on all years of the vehicle, Honda will replace these under any form of warranty.

That's the bad points out of the way, please don't let that put you off because this is one awesome car that I believe anyone would get a thrill out of owning.

In a straight line the car has amazing performance, the Vtec system is absolutly wonderful and you will never get tired of the engine sound screeming its way to 9000RPM.

Around the corners this car handles like nothing else you have ever driven, it is so light, so responsive, when pushed hard you get the smallest amount of understeer followed by the back end hanging out as much as you wish to provoke it.

The gear change in this car is so precise, so slick, many motoring TV programs have mentioned how good the gearbox is and its not until you actually drive the car that you can appreciate this.

You also have to love the brakes, drive this car as fast as you like, if you crash it, it won't be because you couldn't stop in time.

Once inside the car everything is focused on the driver. All the instruments are right where you need them. The seats are very comfortable and the cabin spacious although it feels snug just like a sports car should do. Its not the easiest of cars to get into though. The boot is also a very good size for the kind of car.

Well I think that just about covers it. For the price these cars go for I very much doubt you will find anything better. Finally, this car draws a lot of attention, it's a great feeling driving down the road turning heads.

2000 Honda S2000 Roadster 4 cylinder from North America

Summary:

A crotch rocket with four wheels

Faults:

Trans would grind when shifting from first to second at high rpm. Buzz vibration from transmission. Both fixed under warranty.

General Comments:

Handles impeccably. Goes very very fast. Love the sound of the engine in VTEC.

Rear tires last about 10-12 thousand miles, the fronts about 20 and they are not cheap.

Interior gets noisy above 70 mph with the top up. Still much quieter and comfortable than my old Miata.

Drive this car before you buy it. It's a true sports car and some people just don't get that.

Love the sound of the VTEC? Seriously??? I find the sound of an oversized chainsaw to be very unnerving while in traffic.

I never mentioned anything about a V8. You did. As a matter of fact, my personal car has a V6, with quiet exhaust, and a Bose stereo. When I am driving in town, with the windows up, and my favorite tunes on, looking over to see an oversized weedeater with wheels revving his engine at me IS very unnerving. I do not race, not because my car isn't capable, but because I need it to last. But that doesn't stop a lot of imports with "performance" mufflers from disturbing my well deserved peaceful moment in my own vehicle. On the same token, a burly V8 with loud exhaust can be just as annoying, granted. But, then again, those words were put into my mouth. Good day.

2000 Honda S2000 2.0 from UK and Ireland

Summary:

An F1 car for the road

Faults:

Nothing at all, in the 18 months I had no problems at all, if I was picky I would say that the bonnet was hard to close, that's it.

General Comments:

Fantastic looking, the best gear change of any car I have driven, even an automatic!! astounding engine, twitchy handling in the wet.

2000 Honda S2000 2.0 Vtec from Australia and New Zealand

Summary:

Fun, but requires too much commitment, unless you live next to a racetrack

Faults:

Nothing has failed mechanically. Just the odd rattle from the passenger side dash. Dealer rectified this.

Plastic window creases over no time at all. Needs care to keep clear!

Seat leather needs care also, creases very quickly.

General Comments:

A nice little roadster, rigid chassis is superb, but rear suspension has too much bounce when going though fast bends. German build quality still feels more solid.

Brakes are really superb!, as are the xenon headlights & gearshift.

Engine is economical, but lacks low end torque (i mean this), revving to 6000rpm around town is not really feasible!. Needs a six cylinder.

Bumpy ride on any surface exc for racetrack smooth surfaces. Very tiring on long distances, makes it less practical than you think. Otherwise, as a drivers tool, handling/feedback is VERY good.

Interior very drab for the money. No toys or even a clock (no matter) - get a 2 tone interior!. Too plasticky & no storage space exc boot!.
