2004 Hyundai Getz GSi from UK and Ireland - Comments

"A seriously well put together, good performing car with the best after sales package in the country"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Nothing has actually gone wrong with my car. Its been more of a case of comparing my Getz to my previous car, the VW Polo and thinking something was wrong. Small issues that I picked up on within 2 weeks of driving from the showroom were the fuel consumption for starters. Here I found the car using a lot of fuel and no way on par with the official mpg figures in the brochure. Hyundai informed that all their cars from the engine to the wheel-bearings at new are "very tight" and need breaking in. It was only after around 1500 miles that I have noticed the fuel consumption improving and for 20.00 UK pounds I can drive 250, miles on the motorway at about 75 to 80 mph. Totally on par with the VW Polo which was a 1.2 3 cylinder engine.

Next I heard a knocking sound from the rear suspension over the terrible roads in South London and over speed bumps - Hyundai informed me that the suspension on their cars is quite firm and once again I was comparing the Getz to the Polo. I have really got used to the firmness of the ride and only seems to be so in the city. On the motorway my car is very smooth.

As far as tracking and steering goes, I had some Hyundai standard alloys added to my car at new. I found the steering pulling to left on the motorway and not on city roads. Hyundai informed me these wide wheels had a habit of taking to the camber of most roads and having said that I have no uneven tyre wear after nearly 2000 miles.

General comments?

Great little engine. The 1.3 is the right balance throughout the whole range. Sweet and powerful.

Slow acceleration in 3rd gear.

Engine noisy at 90mph, but so quiet at 70 to 80 mph.

Interior trim is high quality yet in some places looks very cheap.

The stereo/CD player needs to be improved to a model with bigger buttons. Its too fiddly.

Handling is perfect. The steering is very sensitive and great all round.

Trim level is amazing considering what you would pay for a European manufactured car with the same specification.

Seats are fine, but could of had a longer base to sit on.

The 3 door in black with the Hyundai alloys make the car look very cool indeed and at such a competitive price in UK, I can see this car appealing to a very young age group from 18 to 25 as well as middle aged drivers too.

I can't bear to miss the main reason why I bought the Getz and that was the amazing after-sales package which included a transferable 5 year unlimited mileage warranty, 3 years/30,000 miles free servicing and 3 years RAC breakdown cover. Enough said!!!

I have taken delivery of a new 1.3 Getz sports today and am dismayed by the frequent references in various forums to fuel consumption being well below figures given by Hyundai!

I purchased this vehicle for its reliability and good fuel figures for my business as a driving school car here in Milton Keynes, England.- Seems it's going to cost me dear?

I note that Hyundai say the consumption improves when the car has loosened up and done about 1500 miles? can others please put my mind at rest and confirm that?

I also note from the cars owners manual that fuel consumption figures are given in US gallons which are approximately 25 per cent less than an imperial gallon,

is this making fuel consumption look worse than it is?

Hope you can advise me.

Hi

I have a 2003 1.3 Getz and I get approx 330 miles to a tank full of unleaded - most of that is town driving.

You cannot go wrong with this car, unfortunately I missed the 3 years servicing.

Have had 2 problems with mine,

1) A recall over faulty ABS sensor wiring (1 hour to fix)

2) Knocking noise from rear brake whilst braking. This took a few attempts to fix, however it was due to the rear drum springs.

Both were on warranty and there were no problems in returning the car for the work to be done.

10/10.

My wife has owned her Hyundai Getz 1.3 GSI for about 8 months now. We have done around 6000 miles in it. It's great fun for city driving and comfortable on motorways. It keeps up with and passes the traffic easily enough.

What Car magazine reckon Hyundai is the 6th most reliable manufacturer. For a so called "budget brand" that is not a bad position to be in. When we bought the car I did think that if Hyundai offer a 5 year warranty then they must have faith in their products otherwise they will lose so much money in warranty repairs. I'm hoping that the only time our little Getz visits the dealer is for its free service.

I had an issue with fuel economy when we got the car, but it has improved. Also the fuel tank is small so psychologically I thought we were using more fuel when we weren't. My wife managed to drive nearly 400 miles on a tank of petrol from North to South England using a mixture of motorways, dual carriageways and single carriage roads. She's not very heavy on the right foot whereas I am so if you do push the car you pay for it at the pumps.

I like the shape of the Getz. In my opinion it looks so much better than a Fiesta or Clio and far cheaper when you compare the spec like to like.

We are really pleased with the car and can definitely say YES to any one who wants to buy one.

Bought Hyundai Getz Oct 04 previously owned hyundai accent both 1.3 engines. Have had no problems to speak of however like previous reviews the fuel consumption is not as good as I thought it would be and have now done 10,000 miles

I travel about 320 miles when warning light comes on. the accent was at least 340 miles before light came on yet the official mpg in the manuals show I should get more in my getz.

My girlfriend gets about 250 miles out of a tank and it's got over 3000 miles on it. Either it has a fault of the MPG reported by Hyundai are totally wrong. Hyundai customer service is very poor in my opinion. Took 5 months to get the MPG test done :- (

My girlfriend loves her '03 1.1 Getz, but she too only get about 300 miles to a tank, sometimes less. I've worked her mpg out on a few tanks and she is getting about 34-36mpg average. This is very poor, considering Hyundais figures were, I think, 48-50mpg average. She drives carefully and not mostly in town, so she should be getting quite a bit more in my opinion.

Does anyone know what can be done about this? Will the Hyundai garage charge a fortune and do nothing? The car is still in warranty of course.

I have owned a Getz 1.3 GSI for about 18 months, and I have covered 15,000 miles. The only problem with it is an intermittent wheel vibration at around 70 mph. I'm sure it's just a wheel balance problem and I have never gone to get it fixed. Other than that it's fine. Fuel consumption is better than my previous 1.25 Fiesta Zetec. My problems with the car, and I disagree with people who have already written comments, is the styling is dated, the interior trim is no where near as good as a similar level Fiesta, and the handling is poor in the wet or icy conditions when cornering - again much worse than a Fiesta. Other than that the car is OK, I just find it a little boring.

I am nuts about my Getz. It's a great car and it is pretty quick. I'll be honest; I'm still not used to it, but I have been driving a 3.0 Ford Escape Limited for the past few years, so it's a huge change, but having said that, the Getz does hold its own.

I am pretty heavy with my foot, and have definitely experienced this gas consumption issue. Before I continue with that, let me say I was fully aware of this gas issue before I bought the car, but knowing how reliable Hyundai is, I said to myself and my wife "either we pay more for gas, and don't have to worry about pretty much anything else, OR we pay less for gas and spend a lot on fixing problems" (we were comparing to the Fiat Punto and Peugeot 206, which both have a lot of issues; there's also the Suzuki Swift, but it's not as nice looking and I just don't trust their cars).

Now about this gas issue; like I said, I have a lead foot and suffer because of it. I was going through 3 quarters in a couple days (I don't let the car go less than 3 quarters). I recently decided to try driving with a lighter foot, and it's about halved my gas consumption. If you keep your revs less than 3500-4000rpm, you're fine. Also know that this issue has been completely fixed in the newer models.

There are also loud vibrations at higher speeds (again fixed in the newer models) but it doesn't bother me too much; I think of it as a massage chair that only turns on at high speed (LOL).

Having said that, I love this car and everyone that I've let drive it now wants one too.

If you're not sure whether to get it or not, stop thinking about it and buy it already. You won't regret it, but if you don't get it you might regret that.

Come join the Getz family.

By the way, my car now has 93,000 km on it and still runs great.

P.s. please email me if you have questions or concerns

Also, I'm looking for something to boost power a bit. Please let me know, and please in the subject section write "about the getz" or something like that, otherwise I'll just delete it.

My name is Mike and my email is
