1996 Isuzu Trooper LS from North America

Summary:

I love this vehicle and do not look forward to having to get another!

Faults:

The front and rear brakes went out together! WHICH COULD BE A GOOD THING.

Oil leaks throughout engine. Gosh it drinks the oil!

Rattling sound underneath truck whenever I go over bumps.

Need lifters which makes it click, click, click. If I didn't know any better, I would think I had a diesel engine!

Switch on the power window thingy went out which left me not able to roll down any window.

General Comments:

Everything is accessible to me.

Cold and warm air reach the rear seat well.

Since I bought it used, I never had the key to the spare tire in the back so it remains hanging there on the back, kind of like a rear hood ornament.

Nothing breaks easy so I would consider this a kid friendly family vehicle.

1996 Isuzu Trooper LS 3.2 from North America

Summary:

This truck is dependable, comfortable, and strong

Faults:

Ignition key got stuck at about 20000 miles. Dealer fixed and hadn't had problem since.

Replaced the starter at 92000 miles. Went dead all of a sudden, but I replaced it in just about 3 hours with a replacement from Advanced Auto.

General Comments:

Fantastic vehicle. The Trooper has never let me down.

Get 17.5 MPG AVG over 93k miles.

Terrific off-road and on. I've taken it through places that would be trouble for some serious 4X4s.

Not a speedster, but tows well. The torque helped pull my 4000 car-in-tow like it wasn't there (actually got 21 MPG when doing that).

Transmission is the best I've had in any car. Shifts exactly where I would if it were a manual. Strong and silky smooth.

Not sure what all the negative comments are regarding the AC. Never had a problem with it. Nor does it burn much oil - perhaps a quart every 7000 miles.

Runs incredibly well when loaded to capacity. The weight seems to temper the suspension.

And, all the roll-over accusations - pure hogwash. I've had it under some serious lateral forces and never even the slightest indication of toppling over.

Great vehicle just a noisy engine. And replacement of individual coil packs which are expensive!

Presumably this is a petrol version - the Turbo Diesel fixes the coils problem and reduces the fuel consumption.

1996 Isuzu Trooper S 3.2 from North America

Summary:

SUV bargain

Faults:

Only normal wear items have gone bad; tires, shocks, gaskets. We have kept up on all of the maintenance and it has ran perfect. My only complaint would be that oil seems to disappear. No smoke, no leaks. I called Isuzu and they said 1 qt every 1000 miles was acceptable.

General Comments:

This is a great family vehicle. Lots of space, good power and comfortable. It handles well in the snow and ice, no complaints.

Maybe they should change the owner's manual to suggest you check the FUEL level at every OIL fill-up?

1996 Isuzu Trooper S 4.3 from North America

Summary:

A well-build reliable SUV

Faults:

I do have to replace sensors, especially emissions, a lot, and the air conditioner has always given me a problem.

General Comments:

The trooper is great, lots of power, great in snow, easy to handle. Gas mileage could be improved, but it is an SUV. I only have one complaint, from a person that about everyone in the family has a trooper, is that in any trooper I've seen, the air conditioner needs to be improved, they are always breaking.

I have a 96 Trooper with 110k miles and it is still going strong. I agree with the AC issue, I recently had to replace the compressor and a few other parts. I hope this repair lasts a long time because it was $1,200. I do love its handling, its reliability and everything about this vehicle. I plan to keep it for a long time.
