I agree with all of your comments about the fabulous 2000 S Type Jaguar. The reviews were great about this "dream car" and we brought one from a private owner in August. This particular owner brought a 2005 Jaguar and decided to sell this one himself and now we know the reason why it didn't trade it in and "yes" we are 1000% sure that he knew about the problems with this vehicle, but the Lord will judge him accordingly. We test drove the car and "oh how it drive so nicely" and then we brought it and the transmission started shifting roughly on our way home. Well I thought that maybe the fluid or gasket may needed to be replaced and I took it to a local car repair shop and was told that the computer module had to be reprogrammed at a Jaguar dealership only. I went to the first dealership and was told that we need a new torque converter at about $2500.00 and then I took it to a second dealership and was told that we need a new transmission at about $5500.00. Oh, the vehicle have about 87,000 on it and it's a beautiful car, but with all of the problems it's not worth keeping and Jaguar should be held accountable in the court of law since they will not do the honorable thing and recall the vehicle. I have even read one technical bulletin that states the transmission is missing various parts and that's the reason there are transmission related problems. These vehicles were not brought cheap, but a cheap ride will not give us these major headaches. I AM ALL FOR A CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT AGAINST JAGUAR.
We fell on love with the 2000 S type's style... Our driveway is kinda on an incline. I never paid attention that It was reather hard to shift. Until tonight, when I pulled into a driveway that was steep... The gearshift knob broke free from the transmission... I had to leave it there and hope this is covered. This sounds like a known design flaw.. And if I'm not satified with what the warranty covers, I'll be back to take about that lawsuit... Give me a week.

I adore my 4.0ltr. S-type, but am concerned with the occasional message (approx once every 6 - 8 weeks) 'gearbox fault'. I have noticed that sometimes it takes a few seconds to engage reverse and then engages with a noticeable double 'clunk'. Anyone else having same?
Just purchased yesteday and under a lemon law guarentee and an extended warranty a 2000 S Type Jaguar that has exhibited " Gearbox Fault".Unfortunately I will have to return the vehicle as this car was my wife's dream color...{champagne gold}.We have looked long and hard for this car. Is gearbox fault as ominous as it sounds? What could be the possible list of problems. I would sincerely appreciate any and all comments that will enable a successful conclusion to this story.
Many Thanks.
Peter.
Hi-
I bought the 2000 s-type 4.0 2 weeks ago with only 48,000K kiles. As I was driving on the highway something happend to the gear and the car speed fell quickly. As I stepped on the gas the car would not go and only the RPM needle will move. I was on the highway driving about 80MPH when this happened. After I pulled over to the side the car would not go on "R" or "D". I even tried the J-Shaft. There is really something wrong with the transmission of this car. What if it threw it self in reverse while driving? It's only a matter of time until somthing tragic happens and Jaguar filks will probabley do something about it. The car is at the dealership and I will need to wait until tomorrow for them to tell me what is going on. It's quite obvious that it's a transmission problem. When I told them that that they were playing very dumb and were in shock. I would like to be part of this class action law suit as well.
Thanks.
I recently purchased a 2000 s-type 4.0, test drove it, fell in love with it and now I hate it!! I haven't even put 800miles on it since I purchased it and now the transmission is already giving me major problems. I was driving down the highway and my rpms were at 5k..the car began flashing transmission fault and went into limp mode. the car itself only has 50K miles on it, I would LOVE to be a part of this, I work for an automobile dealer and I have experianced first hand in having transmission problems and we stepped up to plate and replace them with any problems without question, seriously, Jaguar needs to stop, take a look at what they are doing here, customer satisfaction is a MAJOR part of the auto industry, they are ruining themselves. please keep me informed LS400brat18@aol.com.
I bought a 2000 S type 3 years ago. It now has 45,000 miles. A week ago the gearbox fault light came on. The car has difficulty accelerating. My mechanic told me that it put itself in first gear to protect the engine. I called the Jaguar dealership first, they told me there is a four day wait before they can even look at it. A "free-world mechanic told me $3,100 + to fix. World class car with first class problems at 45,000 miles? Yeah right.
Same story,
Bought S-Type at 50,000 and have been pumping money into it ever since. Dealer always plays dumb and Jag International just denies my request for any help.
Here is my email, lamtnfun@yahoo.com
If anyone has started a lawsuit, please let me know.
If I get one started I will post the information and would love to get a big response from everyone posting problems.
Thanks,
Larry Chick.
I purchased a 2000 S-Type and have had similar problems with my transmission. The gear shift was always hard to shift especially on an incline. One day while trying to put it in gear the gear shift broke off in my hand.
Now the transmission has a really hard shift when putting the car into reverse. I was told this past week by a mechanic that there is a valve box inside the transmission that Jaguar has had problems with.
Yeah I bought a 2001 Jag S- type 4.0 and haven't had any problems with it till now. I bought it November 2005 and just today it said transmission fault. I was on the freeway when it happened and then the car slowed down and came to a stop. I had to turn the car off and restart it to get it going again. I made it home and I'm about to have it towed to a mechanic tomorrow. I should have just kept my Lexus cause I never had any problems with it. If anyone starts a class-action suit let me know. brandonbp@hotmail.com.
My transmission went out as well at 50,000 miles, I am seeing a common number here... Luckily I had purchased an extended warranty and I was only out the $200.00 deductible, however.. Service is now deplorable, my car is in the shop every week and that is no exaggeration So yes, in answer to your question... I'd be willing to discuss class action.

I purchased a pre-owned 2000 Jaguar S-Type in 2003. In early 2004 I started having problems with the gears sticking while the car was parked on an incline. The dealer informed me the GEAR SHIFT ASSEMBLY needed to be replaced.
In July 2006, the Gear Shift Assembly was replaced again. The deal informed me that if I was parked on an incline I needed to engage the parking brake first, then place the car in park. This worked, but It isn't an acceptable solution.
A few weeks later the Shifter Assembly broke free from the transmission and had to be towed to the dealership. I spent a total of $900 on repairs relating to the problems above. I'm thinking about trading the car in before the transmission fails.
I to have a 2000 s-type jaguar, Oh what a beautiful car. Oooh what problems I have had and still have. Besides the gear problem, I am having problems with a hose leak to the coolant system, air bag warning is on, a leak in the fuel system which make the car run bad. I'm sure I'm forgetting some of the other problems, like how bad the service gets when warranty runs out. I would never by another Jag.
I just bought a 2000 S-type at 80k miles. A gorgeous car with not a single scratch or dent, and the interior is flawless. It drove perfectly for 3 days and then all of a sudden it was hard to get it out of park, and now the D gear does not work. I have to put it in D3 to go forward, otherwise it acts as if its in neutral. This is terrible.
My email is fat_al_404@yahoo.com. Let me know if anyone has had this problem, or about that law suit. This is unsatisfactory.
I purchased a 2001 S Type 4.0 one year ago when it had around 45k miles. It has 60,000 miles, and my Gear Box Fault indicator came on when I was going just under 80 mph. The engine was still running, but there was no power transfer to the rear wheels. In fact, the engine was shaking quite violently even though the rpm's were only around 4,000. I put it in 4th gear, and it ran fine all the way back to the Jaguar dealer.
I don't race the Jaguar, so why is the transmission messed up already?
The dealer has had it since last Friday evening (now Thursday at lunch), and they are still awaiting word for Jaguar HQ as to how to deal with the problem. They tell me it needs a new transmission. At 60k miles? You have got to be kidding me.
I also had two windows fall of track and the coolant overflow tank leaked. So, this is the fourth time it has been in the shop in one year.
My 97 3 Series BMW had 120k miles when I traded it in for the S Type, and it had only 2 problems (air conditioner control module and LCD light display) since I purchased it new. I should have stuck with that car.
