1987 Jeep Comanche Base 2.5 I4 from North America

Fun, and has paid for itself over and over

Clutch slave cylinder leaks.

Valvetrain ticks.

Muffler and catalytic converter rusted through, replaced.

Seat torn and very stained.

No rust.

Replaced steering column in 2009.

Clearcoat on hood and roof chipping after 20 years.

Rubber bushings spongy after 20 years.

General Comments:

Purchased on impulse for $440 in 2007 from original owner who bought it in 1986 as a 1987 model from AMC/Jeep dealer in Bend, Oregon, USA.

Base model with black and pink factory pinstripes on pale yellow paint. Tan/sand interior.

2.5L AMC 4 cylinder, 4 speed manual transmission, 2WD, Dana 35 axle.

1" lift, Cherokee Limited alloy wheels, fiberglass canopy.

Gets fairly good mileage on highway, but struggles on uphill runs and mountain roads. 2.5L is anemic at best; this vehicle will win no drag-races.

Very solid offroad for 2wd.

Large dent in drivers side door/cab, but door still opens.

The muffler and converter "rusted through", but the truck has "no rust", eh?

Best truck ever made

The floor on both passenger and driver side have rusted through and now I have wooden boards for floor boards. The exhaust system went out and had to get replaced, only once though at 260,000 miles. The e-break lines have rusted out so I don't have an e-break. The driver side seat belt buckle broke when I was buckling up. No interior lights, no horn, and steering wheel is lose.

General Comments:

This is the greatest truck ever made in my opinion. there are some problems with it, but the pros outweigh the cons. an example is I got this truck when I turned 16 and 7 years later it still runs great. never had any major repairs aside from exhaust, but I replaced that myself so it didn't cost me any money. the front shocks are starting to get a little worn, but that'll happen after 20 years of use. after this truck breaks down forever I'm going to gut it and sell it for parts because the engine is awesome.

The gentleman was correct saying it is the greatest truck built... too bad they have been discontinued.. my 89 Comanche has just turned 231,000 miles and running like the day I bought it new... the red paint job was a factory defect one at the least... but it has cost me less to own than any car I have ever had... still has most original equipment including the exhaust pipe. Still has original u-joints and engine and transmission... must keep oil changed in both and u-joints greased and it'll last for many years to come.

A strong little truck that can go anywhere, and do almost anything

I have had a few issues with this little truck, the Clutch is currently burnt out, running cost lots of money because the amount of gas you get per gallon varies even if you do the same thing. The exhaust pipe is loose and needs to be welded back into place.

I have had a few problems with the fuse box, don't even get me started on how I jerry-rigged it to keep it working<-- though is does work well and reliably now.

General Comments:

I love this little truck, it can get me anywhere and back again. We had about 3 in a half feet of snow a few days ago, and nobody could make it with huge suped up rigs, and I said "let me by" and got by them by being light enough to float on top of all the snow and drive to the good hunting spot, which was very profitable.

Even still nobody could follow my track until a few days later.

Deep mud, or deep snow if this little rig is in 4 low there is nothing stopping it. My dad has a Z71 with a long bed and posi track, I can go more places then him, and carry the same amount if not more wood then he can, mind you I might not have my front wheels on the ground, I can still get home fairly safe.
