1993 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4.0 from North America

Summary:

Great-looking junker

Faults:

The engine began to "whine" at 45,000 miles despite regular care.

The front end axle had to be replaced 60,000 miles.

One complete brake failure at 85,000 miles.

The engine dies when attempting to go in reverse.

The transmission shifts poorly despite scheduled care.

The vehicle does not always start. This problem is yet to be diagnosed by any of the numerous mechanics I have seen.

A multitude of A/C problems that will cost nearly $1,000 to repair.

The radio cuts in and out whenever the vehicle travels over a bump.

The interior part of the driver-side door separated from the outer door.

The rear doors squeak continually. The dealer was unable to correct the problem.

The paint is flaking off the dashboard.

The cheap plastic center dashboard cracked and had to be replaced.

The list goes on and on, but these are some of the more costly repairs.

General Comments:

There are numerous engineering deficiencies that need to be overcome for me to purchase another Chrysler Jeep product. Buyer beware! Grand Cherokees may look nice, but the cost of keeping them running outweighs any benefit of keeping them. I can't wait to get rid of this car.

I agree that the '93 Grand Cherokee Laredo is not perfect, but it is a far cry from being a junker.

I bought a '93 GCL with 60,000 miles on it about 3 years ago. Since then, I've taken it off road as well as on several trips, including one very long one. I also use it as my primary car for everyday commuting.

The problem with it failing to start is probably tied into the battery and power. My Jeep had a few episodes of not starting - usually in the summer time after continual use of the A/C. I finally purchased a heavy-duty battery (which all Jeeps are designed for) and I have had no problems since.

The main thing to remember is, regular maintenance. I've owned a few different models of SUVs, and the Jeeps have been among the most reliable. Yes, they are expensive to repair, but they tend to be durable. The only best built SUV I had was a Ford Bronco II. Unfortunately, the Bronco II, despite its great build, was a gutless and maintenance nightmare.

I have a 1993 Jeep grand cherokee it has over 230,000 miles on it have had it since new, only recently have I had to do anything to it, like new radiator, water pump, brakes all the way around it and a new air compressor. Up till now only normal maintenance, is about all I have done to it, I have had it since it was new, but mine has the 5.2 v8.

1993 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited from North America

Summary:

Powerful and reliable

Faults:

Some sporadic electrical problems: back up lights would go on when the right blinker was turned on and my foot was on the brake.

Badly creaky interior when going over bumps.

General Comments:

This is a strong, powerful truck! The V8 engine sounds great! It is in surprisingly great shape for being around eight years old.

The seats could be a little more comfortable, but are not that bad.
