Well I am also another 2000 jgc owner that has been having the same problems with door lock making a horrible grinding sound and tail light going out. Fixed the tail light problem, but now need help for the door locks. I hope we can really get a recall on all the problems.

I own a 2001 JGC Laredo. The driver's rear brake light would go out when the lights were on and I stepped on the brake. With the lights off, the brake light worked normally.
I removed the upper light bulb after taking off the rear light assembly. After bending up the single contact point on the assembly, I cut a cross section of a pencil eraser (it's electrically non-conductive) and put it underneath the contact to elevate it. I did the same with one of the dual contacts on the opposite side of the assembly. The rear driver's light works normally and I saved $200 w/this simple repair.
Has anyone figured out a way to fix the door problem on their own and avoided spending hundreds at the dealer? Please e-mail me at monojoseph@aol.com or joseph.monohan@ubs.com.
I purchased a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo in 2000 brand new. Within 15,000 miles my rotors needed to be turned and this costs $150.00 at the dealership. This has continued to be a problem with my SUV through the years. And then to top it off, my right tail light would not work, but my right brake light would... I visited this site and took some advice from the previous posts and fixed my tail light at no cost.
Furthermore, I too have a problem with my door locks. They like to growl at me when I lock/unlock the doors. I can't even open the passenger side door. Any suggestions on how to fix the door locks.
I can see I am amongst the masses with the Grand Cherokee Door Lock problem. Man, this is getting expensive. Has anyone found a way to actually fix the problem themselves. How much does the part cost? Where does one get the part? I am tired of the duck sound. Is it possible to even replace the part yourself? 300.00 bucks is a lot of money for each time the duck cries out. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hey, I just called the Jeep dealer for an appointment on Wednesday morning to check out the nasty noise my passenger door lock is making on my 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The guy wouldn't or couldn't give me a price quote because he said he wasn't sure what type of door lock I had.
What do we need to do to bring this to Daimler Chrysler's attention?
I have a 2000 GCL and recentlty started having the door lock problem. I just came from the Jeep dealer and they want to charge me $81.00 for the part and another $100 for labor. This is too much consider I just saw the part online for $10.00 Has anyone fixed the problem themself?
I am in the same boat as everyone else with my 2000 JGC. The door locks are starting to scare people that are walking by when I use the remote. I have seen people write they found the part online for $10.00. Please tell me where!!! I have looked for these everywhere and cannot find them. I refuse to go to a dealership for fear I will end up on the evening news.
PLEASE HELP... I have a 2000 JGC Laredo with ALL the problems that I see posted here. But I have one major concern. HOW DO I INSTALL NEW HEADLIGHT bulbs. I went to Auto-zone, they were stumped. I even went to a Jeep dealership and they were stumped. They are able to sell these vehicles, but have no idea how to care for them. Please help.
I also have a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee. I have already replaced both front door locks - to the tune of $160 each. The rear left passenger one is now making that grinding noise. Eventually (from experience) I have learned that the lock just stops working. I have not seen any recall notices on this, but will be writing the manufacturer since it seems I am not alone with this problem.
I also am dealing with the 'Duck of Doom.' We have had two actuators replaced while the vehicle was still under the ext-warranty, and now are serenaded each time the door locks or unlocks. I am searching the WEB and have not found a source for parts. If anyone has a source, please pass it on in a posting. We also have had multiple brake/rotor issues with our 2000 JGC, the first within 28k miles. My email is: chasjoye@bellsouth.net parts source or comments welcome.
I just stumbled onto this site. Thanks for all the tips regarding the brake lights and the door locks.
However my headlights are giving me grief. The driver side is out and I cannot trace the problem. Fuse buld etc are not the problem.
Secondly.
The speedometer and tachometer have spun around and are now on the opposite side of the the little needle they rest against when I am not moving.
Any help would be most appreciated. Dealers are clueless.
Please send me any tips!!!
Thanks,

I am having the same issues with my 1999 JGC. I am at my whits end and ready to push it in the river. The rear door does not open at all (how the heck to I get in there!!) and now the front driver side door has the same, but I can still get in. Both make a horrible grinding noise when unlocking and locking. Its embarrassing. I also have the same issue with the tail lights. I have spent so much $$ on bulbs until I finally got a assembly off the net. I still have the same issue with the lights and I am wanting to do what has been suggested on this site with the light however, I can't get into the rear to do this!!

Yet another 2000 JGC owner with quacking door locks. I replaced one myself with the assembly from the dealer to the tune of around $85. It is possible to do it yourself, but requires a little contortionism to reach all the connections through the door. The window should be up when you remove the door panel, and pay attention to the connectors on the rods and how they work before you start. You may also have to buy a couple of the plastic door panel fasteners. Good luck!
Well, not to be the odd man out, but I have had no problem removing the two screws on my tail light assembly and replacing the bulbs. Still I have not had to replace the front and it does seem a bit daunting a task. I also have had to have the actuator replaced on my 2000 JGC. I actually have had more problems with the transmission and dealership customer service at South Point Jeep here in Austin than anything else.
