2000 Jeep Wrangler Sahara review from North America

"There's nothing else like it. But it may not be for you"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

At about 7500 miles, the dealer had to replace a circuit board for the Sentry anti-theft system. This was done under warranty.

Very hard to figure out how to replace the blasted jack in its fitted space under the seat.

General comments?

This is my second Wrangler, and the TJ series (1997 to present) is a vast improvement over my older YJ (1987 to 1996). Most notably, the suspension is greatly improved, handling is better, and ergonomics inside the vehicle are much nicer.

This Jeep has been a very reliable vehicle. Just one fault, aside from regular maintenance. I've driven it off road only rarely; it's mostly a city-street commuter.

Before buying a Jeep, make sure you realize you're not buying a car or even a conventional sport utility. You're buying a vehicle that was designed for off-road use. No, I drive mine off road only once in a blue moon. And I could certainly find a more comfortable and economical vehicle in which to drive to work. But I like Jeeps. There's a lot to be said for having a nimble, reliable, all-weather vehicle (especially here in the northeastern US) that can take abuse and punishment, and still look great!

Also, Jeeps are one of the very few vehicles that actually look better with age.

Jeeps are not appropriate for people who like to drive fast, or who have long, high mileage freeway commutes. They're bumpy, noisy, and even after years of practice, it still takes a good five minutes to put up or take down the soft top. Trust me, it's not a push button operation.

So if you want to cruise at high speed, in comfort and style, listening to your killer audio system -- please, buy something else!

My last car was a Jeep. My next car will be, too.
