1999 Kia Sportage EX 1.5 from North America

Summary:

It sucks and I want my money back

Faults:

First problem was the brakes. For some reason the rear brakes would never engage. We were always changing the front brakes, but, never the rear. So the dealer replaced the entire rear braking system twice, and we still have this problem.

Second we spent 1400.00 on a factory tune up, because the spark plugs kept blowing out of its sleeve. Well they don't blow out of the sleeve any more, but, they fill with oil and engine light stays on.

Third, the entire exhaust system was replace at a cost of 1000.00, and on a cold morning it still sounds like a motorcycle at top speed.

Fourth and final, the RPMs when idle or at a stop light bounces all over from 1000 to 3100. The car sounds a lawn mower. Took it to the dealer. They had it 5 days and tell me that they could find nothing. I am trading it in for a FORD. I will never by a KIA motor vehicle ever again.

1999 Kia Sportage from North America

Summary:

Worked okay for what it cost, but repairs are a horrible experience

Faults:

Brakes Failed, Gearbox failed, engine is finicky. The manuals are really hard to get so you have to go to the dealer. I got charged a thousand bucks to change two lousy plugs and a transfer case gasket. Now, it won't start in a small temperature range - between eighty and ninety-five degrees, but at all other times. Alas, I live in AZ so it's often that temp in the morning. I'm terrified to go for another expensive repair on what is probably a tiny problem if I had a simple manual. I think they hoard their manuals so you have to get a repair and get raped.

General Comments:

I bought it cheap. It pulls well, but I sure am tired of weird engine lights and problems that are inscrutable. I also wish they'd make their manuals more easily available, and more general. Or if you could get a manual at all.

1999 Kia Sportage from North America

Summary:

I Have Become Attached

Faults:

I've had to replace the alternator, front disc brakes, pads and most recently a tune up after it was discovered that the shaking of the car was due to the oil soaked spark plug that was pulled out of it.

General Comments:

The Good: The car has an awesome turning radius. The seat is easy to slide down in the back. The mpg is OK, but I would think it would be better for a car this size. Wonderful power steering. Holds it's oil well. Still sounds good while idle and running. The interior is beautiful still. Even though the aforementioned parts had to be replaced, they were relatively inexpensive.

The cons: The convertible top has a hole in the back. Homeless people have actually gotten into my car because the convertible is so easy to take down. The Air conditioning did leak, and I suspect it will again this summer. Other than that, this is a very good car, but then again I'm single and don't know how good of a family car it is.

1999 Kia Sportage from North America

Summary:

Please, for your safety and others do not buy this vehicle

Faults:

Brakes squeal all the time.

Brake dust is difficult to get rid of.

There is grinding when the gears shift.

General Comments:

The car is quite comfortable, but safety should outweigh comfort and this is not a safe vehicle. It is top heavy and my mother died when the KIA flipped on its top and continued to roll down the interstate. It slid for about a tenth of a mile before coming to rest on its top.

Even when the brakes were changed and cleaned they would squeal all the time.

This SUV did make for a nice ride and had lots of room for travel and hauling goods.

1999 Kia Sportage 2.0 from North America

Summary:

Nice for a while then....

Faults:

Spark plugs, Timing Belt, Brake pads, Roaters.

General Comments:

The Sportage is a OK car. Most of my problems were in the last 2 years. Its in the shop now getting the timing belt replaced. Setting me back about $350. Up until last year the car/truck has been excellent.
