1997 Land Rover Discovery SD7 4.0 from North America

Summary:

A 4x4 that delivers

Faults:

Marker and parking light bulb replacements seemed premature. Wheel center caps fell off. Coolant hose split at 19000 miles. Plastic on rear bumper and around rear bumper lights faded, cracked and eventually fell off. Most of the items were replaced/repaired under warranty by the local Cadillac/Rover dealer. (Don't keep it after the warranty expires unless you know a very good garage).

General Comments:

This Rover was the entry level with cloth seats and no sunroofs.

I have heard that the model with leather has a totally different seat that is extremely uncomfortable. The cloth were easy to clean (I have two Black Labradors) and the back seat was easily removed to reveal an incredible amount of cubic space. The huge windows were one of our favorite features. It also had two jumper seats in the back which we never used.

This rover took my family and I through a severe snow storm over the Donner Pass not far from Lake Tahoe. We were the only vehicle on the I-80 as we drove through the Sierra Nevada range from Sacramento, CA to Reno, NV. The rover charged through the snow confidently, (Without chains) being at night, the front driving and rear fog lights were very good. The traction was incredible and the experience will never be forgot. There can be bad things said about Land Rover quality, but when placed in the extreme our rover was impressive. It is this reason that I would look at Land Rover again.

1997 Land Rover Discovery V8i from North America

Summary:

Better to know before you buy

Faults:

There is always something going wrong with the Discovery. The Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) has been replaced twice. There is corrosion on the aluminum doors. The window seals all split. It gets terrible gas mileage ~ averages 11 mpg. And if you don't know a mechanic personally, be prepared to sign over half of every paycheck.

General Comments:

If you are considering a Land Rover, know what you're getting yourself into. The "club" of owners include many loyal Rover aficionados. However, if you're not going to be going off road or towing horses, get a Mitsubishi Montero Sport. Similarly priced, same great comfort, much more reliable and cheaper to repair.

1997 Land Rover Discovery SE7 3.9L V8 from Australia and New Zealand

Summary:

A secondhand 4WD bargain if you can service the vehicle yourself or by a local garage

Faults:

The Discovery has so far proved to be a very reliable vehicle, contrary too many reports I have read from other owners.

The only fault I have experienced with the vehicle has been a loose accelerator kick-down cable, which I fixed in 2 minutes. The loose cable prevented the transmission from kicking down to the next gear when the pedal was fully depressed.

General Comments:

The Discovery is a very comfortable vehicle which is highly capable in the bush. Unlike the Series II which has traction control, mine has the simple diff lock which proves to be far more effective off-road. I take the car into the bush for a workout every two weeks, and it still drives me to work every weekday without a problem.

The rear seats are comfortable, but the two extra seats in the rear are for young children only.

The driver's footrest is difficult to access due to the plastic cover which hides the wiring being far too close to the pedals, so your foot can get caught, but I am now used to it.

1997 Land Rover Discovery S 2.5 Tdi from Australia and New Zealand

Summary:

Cheap to run, extremely capable 4wd vehicle

Faults:

Injectors clogged and had to be decarbonised.

After market Sony stereo caused problems on delivery. This was fixed quickly, as the wires were around the wrong way!

General Comments:

My Land Rover has been an exceptional car.

It's great around town, and I get great fuel economy around town, on the highway and off road. It's no drag car, however, but it keeps up with the traffic flow.

Discoveries are very comfortable cars inside, and are fabulous long distance cruising cars.

Vision out of the car is superb, and the permanent 4WD is great on wet roads - the car is very stable, even during fast cornering.

Off road performance is exceptional, but be careful of the door seals letting water in during deep water crossings!
