2003 Land Rover Freelander SE3 review from North America

"Very happy with this car so far"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

A coolant return hose was improperly clamped and dripped antifreeze.

I noticed this before it became an overheating problem. The dealership fixed the leak and also replaced the thermostat.

The air conditioning didn't work from factory (I purchased the vehicle during the winter and didn't realize it was broken for several months). The dealer re-charged and it worked fine all summer.

There is a small rattle above the rear-view mirror, which the dealer couldn't fix. Turn the radio up; the rattle disappears.

General comments?

This is the 2 door, with removable hardtop. It is my wife's car. She originally wanted a Jeep Wrangler, but after driving the Landie, she was sold.

The handling is the most impressive part of this vehicle. I currently drive a Ford Escape (company car) and there is no comparison.

The Freelander is smooth and precise on both the highway and side roads. In fact, it may be too good since I often find myself really speeding (80-90 MPH) and not even knowing it!

I also enjoy the removable top. I am capable of removal/installation by myself in less than 10 minutes. I wish the car came with a soft top (it's a $1000 option) but we were able to buy an aftermarket "shower top" which is okay, but doesn't have a window in it.

Yes, the interior controls are awkward compared to domestic makes, but the Britt's would probably find the controls in a Chevy the same way.
