The only thing that I have had to replace is the brakes.
The four cylinder motor is a bit loud.
Great gas mileage.
Fantastic reliability, Three years and no problems.
I am 6'3 250 pounds and fit comfortably.
Comfort, reliability, great gas mileage and a nice looking car well worth the money.
I've a 1999 Mazda 626 ES v6 2.5 FI, I am 91000 miles into the car I've had to replace basically every single moving component within this car. Transmission, engine, all pumps belts, rotors, brakes. The works, this car has cost-ed me over 6k in trouble. It looks great and drives great when it wants to. Other than that, it really has a lot of problems as far as I am concerned. Ill never buy Mazda again.
Well, the 99' and the 2001, much of the "same" part... Are more improved..
2001 Mazda 626
Car runs fine.. no problems yet.
Rattle in the rear occurs as slow speeds and may be caused by a torsion bar that needs tighten.
Other than that I do like the car and the engine has given me no problems after 75K.
I got a 2001 es 2.5 v6 an it works fine only problem is the pulley belt goes quickly an some time when going slow speed the car tends to jerk to go faster other than that it is a great car for the money compared to honda and toyota which cost a fortune an there feature is not so nice...
For all Mazda 626 owners from 1993 or 1994 thru 2002:

What is described is exactly what happened to me this past weekend. If your transmission has not acted up yet and the o/d (overdrive) light has not begun to flash, I highly recommend that you buy the cooler made specifically for these transmissions. Mazda even sent out a bulletin to all of its dealerships about the problem and how to install the cooler, which is basically a mini radiator for the transmission. I knew the cars were not made well because of the Ford parts, but I never realized how bad it was. Also, the stereo stopped playing cd's and would get stuck on one station because the gauges went out. As well, the lights inside the gauge cluster went out too. If you look at other forums about these cars... everyone pretty much has the same problem.
I can tell that I am a victim too of Mazda 626 2001. I bought an used car from a private owner. I've been blinded when I bought the car by its large capacity, good gas consumption and very nice design.
Right after that I noticed the standard annoying noise in the back of the car. Also the radio freak out when I start the heating for the back window of the car. You hear all the noise from outside. It was my mistake because I haven't made more research for this car before buy it. Now I'm looking forward get rid of it.
I just bought a 2001 Mazda 626 2.0 and there's rattling all under the car. I replaced the rear struts and nothing has changed. I am very disappointed with Mazda, and I am going to have to stick with Toyota and Honda.
