1993 Mazda MX6 from North America

Summary:

More trouble that it's worth

Faults:

In this last 8 months I have had to have several repairs done on this car:

A new distributer * 4. Yes, I had it replaced four times.

A new alternator.

A new starter.

A new muffler. (This one was to be expected at some point, but lumped with the repairs listed above, it was an annoyance.)

General Comments:

I love this car because when I drive it I feel like I am in a race car. I have test driven new cars and don't think they drive as well.

But, I will buy a new car and it won't be a Mazda because this one has given me so much grief.

I have had the car stall out on my while driving as fast as 40 MPH. It was scary and dangerous. I keep getting it fixed and clearly the mechanics cannot figure out the problem.

While I like the way it drives I would never recommend this car to anyone.

Hey man, I have the same problem, except mine will shutter really bad. The mechanic I went to checked it out and said there was oil puddling up around the spark plugs, where they connect to the plug wires, causing the plugs to foul after a while. It will burn the coil up; that may be why you had to replace it four times; just put a new set of valve cover gaskets and it will fix it for a while. Mazda had a recall on some of the MX6s because of this problem.

1993 Mazda MX6 LS 2.5L V6 from North America

Summary:

For the money, one of the best cars out there

Faults:

The distributer went out a few weeks after I purchased the car. Dealer price for full distributer replacement including wires and plugs was $400.

Valve cover gaskets are a known problem with high mileage MX6's. Mine are leaking oil, but not badly. The cost of replacement is around $300.

My water pump was cracked at about 130k miles, I had it replace for $120.

Don't get me started on the automatic transmission. If you can't find a manual transmission, I suggest you swap out the auto at the first sign of trouble. These auto transmissions are horrible and don't last very long.

Please remember that this car has 140k miles on it and has been driven quite hard.

General Comments:

Acceleration is good, and you can laugh at most four cylinder owners after any stoplight.

Handling is excellent, I suggest buying a rear strut tower bar to further tighten it up. Cost is about $20 shipped, and install takes 10 minutes with a socket wrench.

The seats are fantastic, and this car is very comfortable for long drives. The interior is very smooth.
