1993 Mazda MX6 LS review from North America
"For the money, one of the best cars out there"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
The distributer went out a few weeks after I purchased the car. Dealer price for full distributer replacement including wires and plugs was $400.
Valve cover gaskets are a known problem with high mileage MX6's. Mine are leaking oil, but not badly. The cost of replacement is around $300.
My water pump was cracked at about 130k miles, I had it replace for $120.
Don't get me started on the automatic transmission. If you can't find a manual transmission, I suggest you swap out the auto at the first sign of trouble. These auto transmissions are horrible and don't last very long.
Please remember that this car has 140k miles on it and has been driven quite hard.
General comments?
Acceleration is good, and you can laugh at most four cylinder owners after any stoplight.
Handling is excellent, I suggest buying a rear strut tower bar to further tighten it up. Cost is about $20 shipped, and install takes 10 minutes with a socket wrench.
The seats are fantastic, and this car is very comfortable for long drives. The interior is very smooth.
