1991 Mercury Capri XR2 Convertible DOHC 1.6 liter turbo from North America

Summary:

The little car that could!!!

Faults:

Really no problems yet. General wear and tear is the only thing that has gone wrong beside my foot to the floor, which burnt two exhaust valves.

The usual problem of finding performance parts or parts is the biggest problem with this car.

General Comments:

It's a beautiful machine that's quick and looks good. If parts were easier to find, there would be more of them on the streets. I'm proud to own this car.

Summary:

Dependable gas saver, sporty

Faults:

Alternator, drive axles, normal wear and tear.

General Comments:

I had this car for 8 years now. I would never get rid of it.

The turbo has lots of power to climb hills. Not sluggish. Great MPG. Fun to drive.

Very dependable car. I have over 2 hundred thousand on the car, and still runs like new. Just a great sporty gas saver.. I get comments on the car all the time.

1991 Mercury Capri XR2 1.6 turbo from North America

Summary:

I love this cute little car

Faults:

This car is hard to start.

It is sluggish like it's not getting enough fuel when it's in first gear and when turning at corners.

The last time I drove it, I had to shift into neutral and give it gas whenever I stopped or it would die.

General Comments:

This is the first sport car I've had, it has some problems, I hope they're only minor.

They don't make parts or repair manuals for my car anymore, so I'm trying to find a used manual.

I want to keep this car for a long time and knowing that there will be be things that need fixed.

If there is someone out there that can help me find a repair manual, or might know what could be wrong with my car, my e-mail address is (sheilaludlowusa10@yahoo.com). Any comments would be welcome.

There is a place in Pennsylvania that is a great source for Capri parts. I used to live out there and visited their site several times. They also have a great website. The place is called Midstate Mustang but they also have a huge source of Capri parts.

The hard starting/sluggishness/stalling (probably most noticeable at low RPMs) you're experiencing could likely be a bad oxygen sensor located in the exhaust plumbing just after it exits the engine. You can see the sensor if you look between the engine and radiator. There's a single wire coming from the sensor. Inexpensive and easy to replace. Also make sure the easy tune-up items are done: plugs, cap and rotor, new plug wires if needed, ignition timing, etc.

1991 Mercury Capri XR2 Turbo 1.7 4 cylinder turbo from North America

Summary:

Favorite car I've ever owned, ZOOM!!

Faults:

Front wheel bearings at 40,000 miles.

General Comments:

Tight steering, handles very well, FAST.

Super sleek body style, love the convertible, very dependable, 32-36 mpg, a real joy to drive on the highway.

My third sports car and definitely my favorite, will keep this car for the kids to enjoy. Very little restoration required and minimal maintenance so far.

Always turns heads when in town, lots of leg room and plenty of zoom!!

1991 Mercury Capri 1.6L from North America

Summary:

A fun skateboard on the highway

Faults:

Two vinyl tops, about to get a third.

Driver's side window motor.

Cloth seats wearing (on second pair of seats)

Repainted car in 2007 - faded irregularly (but was also in a few minor fender-benders and the body shop didn't always match colors well.

Have replaced minor plastic parts (ashtray top, map pocket on door)

Generally I use Mid County Mustang on line for replacement parts - very complete assortment.

Just purchased hardtop.

Top leaks in heavy rain - was not well designed.

Poor interior light at night unless you have the hardtop.

General Comments:

First off, I am sentimentally attached to this car as it was my late partner's primary car in California.

It has worn quite well considering its age and that it was an inexpensive car to start out with. I've kept it very well serviced by a local mechanic wherever I lived and they seem to be able to easily address relatively minor issues that came up. More recently I have invested in a hardtop for it (purchased on Craigslist) with other parts from Mid County Mustang on the web or Capri Parts also on the web.

The car is definitely cheap to run - I have the 5 speed manual transmission, which is fun to use - and I average 33 miles to the gallon (range 25 - 39 mpg).

I love to drive the car in the summer - it is a little skateboard with agility and speed. But of course, it is small so I feel a little intimidated when an over-sized Cadillac Escalade starts to tailgate me (yeah, I am one of those guys driving 55 mph, but always in the far right lane).

It is cool to own and drive a less commonly-seen car, and now that it is winter the hardtop gives it an much sportier look than with the old vinyl top up.
