1999 Mercury Cougar V6 2.5L V6 from North America

Summary:

Great car, Great value

Faults:

I've Had the car for two years now and the only problems I've had were tie rods that I replaced. They were a little shaky right after I got the car. The previous owner kept every service record. They replaced the battery several times as well as the alternator. Still have the same tires on it and expect another two years from them because they are GOOD tires. Sunroof motor failed me last fall. In my haste to close it I damaged the rail guides. I'll just keep it closed. The paint is truly outstanding. Its held up incredibly well for a nine year old car. Overall its been a joy to own. Loads of comfort. Handle great in turns with excellent center of gravity. Very underestimated car. Power is fair, but shows weakness when challenged by comparable cars. fuel economy is fair. The temp light came on all the time, but I fixed it by adding coolant about 5mm over the max line. The springs for the hatch are much too weak to lift the hatch. The lock in the rear light for the hatch doesn't work. The body is just starting to show rust. Center console moves from side to side even though I've tightened it several times. Overall, It's been a great car for me and inexpensive to operate. Very reliable.

1999 Mercury Cougar from North America

Summary:

Overall- good for the money

Faults:

We purchased a 1999 Cougar for our 16 y/o daughter about a yr ago. Like many of you the sunroof was broken. (it was raining when my husband went to pick it up) Consulting our local Mercury dealership the tracking we needed was 1500.00! Not including labor. The problem we are having now is the A/C NOR HEATER/DEFROST is working the blower motor was replaced a yr ago and has worked great until about 3wks ago. She just turned the car off and when she returned minutes later and restarted the car nothing would happen to the A/C, Heater, Defrost. We checked obvious fuses w/no luck. Anyone else have these problems?? What were solutions?? Please email me at cmemet@cox.net.

1999 Mercury Cougar V6 turbo from North America

Summary:

Worst car made by ford

Faults:

I have had my 1999 cougar for a little over a year now, and I bought the car solely for the look. not soon after I purchased the car I realized how deceiving looks can be. it is by far the worst car ever made by ford. and I'm not making that up, the ford technician told me that himself when we had to call them because 6 different mechanics could not figure out what was wrong with the car. my trunk will not open, my tires suck my trans jumps when it switches gears, my gas tank is crooked and the gas cap is very hard to open. I've had 3 new batteries, a new alternator, fuel pump, and many many more. my advice NEVER NEVER NEVER buy a cougar!!!

1999 Mercury Cougar Sport 2.5 V6 from North America

Faults:

I purchased the car new and I store it every year from Dec 15 till may 1. The car has performed perfectly. It looks great and is a real joy to drive. This past summer I drove it to Arizona to see relatives. I got great mileage and had no car problems at all. Trip mileage was about 4,800. It still has orignal battery and I have never replaced any part at all. One complant might be the tires, they look like they will be replaced around 35,000 miles. Really like this car!!

1999 Mercury Cougar Coupe 2.4 from North America

Summary:

I love the Mercury Cougar!!!

Faults:

I have replaced the alternator twice.

I had to replace the front passenger side wheel bearing at 132,000 miles.

I had to replace brake pads at 133,000 miles.

I've had to replace tires 3 times, and the first 2 times weren't enjoyable. I kept getting a bad tire and having to get it replaced up to 3 times.

I had the plugs and wires replaced at 100,000.

I had the computer replaced at 131,000. I took to a local mechanic. Ford swears the computer was not bad, but was the air flow sensor.

General Comments:

I have owned my 1999 Cougar since 2000, bought it with 32,000 miles on it. All in all, I have no complaints except the computer and that is an issue between my mechanic and Ford. I have enjoyed this car and am pleased with the performance. Other than the alternators, I haven't had any problems until after 100,000 miles. That says to me, it has been a good car and still is. No motor problems at all. Other than a 1978 Pontiac Trans Am, this has been the best car that I have owned. It has tremendous power! I take offense at all the negative things I hear about Cougars, as none of the problems have happened to me. Now it's beginning to need more repairs, but as of 100,000, it's time. I would recomend this car to anybody except the young. I think it has too much power for a young person. The only other problem is the tires. I have had problems with tires from the beginning.
