1992 Mercury Grand Marquis LS 4.6 Liter V8 from North America

Summary:

A Lincoln for the price of a Pinto!!

Faults:

The windshield wiper motor went, the wipers were stuck up on the windshield, so had to replace that, $75.

Had to replace the spark plugs and the wires, because the car was missing so badly, $230.

Had to get an oil leak around the oil filter assembly fixed, began to leak when I put a higher viscosity oil in the engine, $50.

The car also burns a slight amount of oil, maybe a quart every five thousand miles. One of my friends who used to be a mechanic at a Ford dealer, told me to switch the oil to Mobil One 15-50, but to only use one quart the first time I changed the oil, and two the next, and so on until it was all Mobil. Also when I had to add oil to only add Mobil. This has seemed to help the oil burning problem as I have only had to add about a half a quart of oil in five thousand miles.

Also I had to get a leak around the front passenger side wheel well fixed, as when it would rain water would get into the floor of the car and cause the carpet to get wet, $175.

General Comments:

I love this car, it is so comfortable, it is great on gas, I went approx. 500 miles on a trip (to the mountains, many hills going up and down with cruise control!!) and I got an average of 31 miles per gallon, I could not believe that with a big V8 with over 100000 miles on it.

The engine runs so great and there is so much room in the car and the trunk is huge, this is a great car for traveling, and it rides really smooth.

1992 Mercury Grand Marquis GS 4.6L SOHC V8 from North America

Summary:

Bargain reliable Highway cruiser

Faults:

The AC system refurbished.

The engine at 100k started to burn a little oil. It uses about one quart every 5,000 miles.

The alternator failed at 80k and was replaced.

The paint has begun to chip and fade, the car was never garaged.

The front Brake rotors replaced at 100k.

Replaced sun damaged headliner in 2001.

General Comments:

The interior design lacks finesse, but the car is very comfortable. This car is a very good highway cruiser.

Gas shocks made the handling improve to satisfactory, the car has good acceleration and highway performance.

Every power accessory is still operating, the interior fabric as a whole has held up very well.

Hi, I have also a mercury Grand-marquis 1992 GS, and the paint is very cheap. I think that the sun burnned my paint like that. But I painted it this last summer. I have 213 000 kilometers in my odometer. The engine take a lot of oil, but not smoke. I put two litters of oil whit 5w30 and one litter whit the 10w30. I use the Valvoline Max Life. It's a good oil, but I thought that the engine would take less oil, but isn't in their publicity.

L need some advice. a neighbor has a 1992 Mercury Grand Marquis which had several problems when he bought it.

The previous owner only drove the car for local shopping and never drove it on the highway.

My neighbor was offered the car for five grand and he bought it. It only had 35000 miles on the odometer. He soon had to replace the wire harness, the catalytic converter and the thermostat. Bills came in at 3 grand.

He now wants to literally give it away for a few thousand dollars because he was told the car needs a new computer card.

My question.. is this too risky to consider or should l take a chance. The car only has 40,000 miles on the counter.

I do a lot of highway driving, if that's what this car needs.

It's almost like a new car in appearance.

Any advice???

Steve.
