I bought an 88 Grand Marquis LS for $800.00 dollars nearly a year ago, with right at 100k miles on it. It now has 125k plus and is running beautifully.

This has been by far one of the best cars I have ever bought. I have had only minor issues with the car, and it has had these problems since I purchased it. The amp light would come on a lot. It took it nearly eight months to finally stop charging, so I replaced the alternator and have not had any troubles since with that issue.

Another minor issue with the car is the rear windows do not roll up or down with the switch, you have to manually do them. Also the heater constantly blows out of the defrost, and the A/C does not work.

Other than that, the car is super reliable, and for its size it can get up to 26mpg.

Another thing is the comfort of the ride, these cars are smooth on the highways, and they accelerate fairly good, again considering their size.

I am very happy with this car. I have owned newer ones that were nowhere near as reliable as this car.

I know this is an old post, but I am just trying to find others with these beauties!!

Something sounds fishy about all those consecutive breakdowns, one after another.

Got a 1989 Mercury Grand Marquis. Battery won't charge. Guy said he replaced the alternator, with the same results.

Battery and electrical issues happen surprisingly often on these older Panthers, that's their greatest problem. Ford didn't really start upping their game on this front until around 1995 or so either.

I have never had electrical issues with my 1989 Grand Marquis LS. I believe just keep up the maintenance, clean the grounds and change the terminals if needed, and all will be good.
