2001 Mitsubishi Galant ES 2.4 from North America

Summary:

Adequate transportation, but nothing to write home about

Faults:

There have been minor issues with trim falling off, but that has been fixed with adhesive.

A more major issue is the ignition cylinder (where you insert the key), which has locked up twice and required towing, replacement, and re-keying the car (both incidents happened under 20,000 miles). This seems to be connected to some electrical issues (radio, A/C, heater) that have never been resolved.

General Comments:

By most measures, the car has been good. Most of the time only gasoline and oil changes are the things we tend to (along with regular services).

However, the running expenses are not as cheap as some (Honda, Toyota) because the mileage is not very good (21 mpg for a 2.4 liter 4-cylinder engine).

The back seat is very small and the rear seat does not fold down to increase rear storage.

The styling of the car is very nice on the exterior (very BMW like), but the interior suffers from plastic fake-wood.

Controls and gauges are very good. Radio controls could be better though.

2001 Mitsubishi Galant ES 3.0L V6 from North America

Summary:

Mash the gas pedal and prepare for takeoff!

Faults:

Rear defogger had 3 lines that did not work. Had dealer replace it, but the work was sent out to a glass shop that made a mess of the car. Molding trim that went from the base of the front windshield, over the roof, and down to the bottom of the rear glass had to be replaced twice due to the poor installation job of the rear window.

General Comments:

V-6 is definitely the way to go in this car. The 4-cylinder was a dog and almost couldn't get out of it's own way when I had one as a loaner car.

Mash the gas and prepare for take off! Some torque steer from the 195 HP jumping to the fairly light front end.

Comfortable seats make for a smooth ride, although road noise is easily noticed on the rougher surfaces.

2001 Mitsubishi Galant from North America

Summary:

Not worth the hassle

Faults:

The dealer wants to perform services to the car that aren't listed in the maintenance service. Had the "carbon" cleaned out of the intake manifold, went from 29mpg to 26mpg.

Now the "service engine soon" light stays on after having the oil changed.

The front end now has a very loud squeak when turning the steering wheel.

General Comments:

Not able to drive car with out air blowing on defrost. Cabin gets unbearably hot, even with the windows open.

Wondering, how much research you did before buying the vehicle? Did you investigate the dealer or see evidence of service history? Perhaps the car has not had regular servicing or been looked after by previous owner (s)

In my experience if you follow these two simple rules, you reduce the risk of buying a lemon.

2001 Mitsubishi Galant V6 24 2.5L V6 from Sweden

Summary:

An everyday exec saloon, and weekend racer

Faults:

As in other reviews I have seen here and there, I have to point out the problems with the brake vibrations. When I first got the car, the dealership offered me a 5000 km warranty, and after just 2000 km I already had to change all brake disks and calipers. Free of course. But having to pay for it is still fairly cheap, around 400€. The power windows irritate me when temperature reaches -10 degrees Celsius, because if you open them, they won't close completely because of the rubber sealing which of course are frozen stiff. But that's about it.

General Comments:

Very nice ride. If you don't have enough cash to buy a Nissan Skyline, get this. In exchange it's cheaper, more comfortable and more powerful that a BMW 3 series, Audi A4, Volvo s40 or a Saab, looks better and everybody doesn't have it. Most often it comes with already mounted side skirts, spoilers and fog lights, and light window tint. The engine noise is music to my ears, I often turn off the cd just to "tune in" to the V6 "vroom".

The seats are very confortable compared to other cars, but keep in mind they are not sport seats. Sitting position is a little bet too high from the ground for me, but it makes parking a little bit easier. This car can be driven "limo style" (first gear to start, then put it in 4'th and just cruise) or more sporty, read: don't let it go under 4000 rpm, because between 4000 and 6000 rpm it really shows the benefits of having a V6 under the hood. It also handles great up to 180 km/h, even in freeway slalom, even though I wouldn't recommend it.

Another thing is that you don't look stupid in it if you wear a suit - think about driving a Skyline and wearing a tie.

It's me again. It's July 2005, and I'm still very satisfied with this car. In addition to the above, I have successfully reached the top speed of 235 km/h, and I must say it handles surprisingly well at that speed. It felt like I could have pushed it a little bit more, but every time I tried that I either ran out of road, or some Sunday driver blocked the fast lane.

A rust spot appeared under the hood, where the plastic air intake is mounted on a steel plate. I guess some humidity builds up between these two, but this can be helped by changing the air intake to a custom open-air kit that costs about 200€. Such a kit replaces the air box with an aluminum pipe and a washable air filter.

Since at 9000km it's time to change the cam belt, I thought it would be appropriate to add that it costs between 350 and 500€, depending on some other details that may need to be changed at the same time.

Otherwise there is a small problem with the gearbox: when it's cold outside, it takes about 10 minutes of driving before 1:st and 2:nd gear go in smoothly. I don't know what this depends on, but people say it's no biggie. Some say it's normal for winter conditions, others say I need to change the "sync rings".

I can still warmly recommend this car to everyone..
