"An extremely reliable and economical truck for light hauling and general transportation"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Prior to my owning the truck, the rear parking brake cables had seized due to cracks in the cable sheaths. The replacement cables from Nissan had rubber reinforcements to protect the affected area.

Alternator failed at around 240,000 km due to a shorted internal rectifier diode.

At 285,000 km the standard transmission failed when the front bearing on the countershaft seized, and the countershaft broke. The outer part of the bearing had spun in it's seat, damaging the transmission case. Clutch was replaced at this time, out of convenience.

At 290,000 km, the electric choke failed due to intermittent internal connection.

General comments?

My truck is 17 years old now, and the western Canadian winters have taken their toll on the body, but the engine runs as good as it did 11 years ago, and like then, the gas mileage is still between 28 and 32 miles per imperial gallon.

Even when the transmission failed spectacularly, it still brought me home (about 140 miles) in the only gear it had left -- fourth. The truck has never left me on foot, and is as reliable as the day I bought it back in 1990.

Used parts are very easy to come by, and are generally quite inexpensive.

The only real negative I've noted is that the front seats are not especially comfortable, and seat spring breakage appears to be a common issue.

I've got a 86 720 King Cab 4x4, and I personally have found it a total nightmare finding parts new or used! Maybe I should move to Canada!

I have an '86 standard cab 4x4. Here in the states, parts are easy to find, but getting expensive. Drip rail stainless trim molding, $58 per side. Plastic/stainless door and fender molding, between $39 to $98 (for the door piece). All parts are available from the dealers as yet, but you can sure save a bundle at the recycle yard. Nice to see someone that still fixes things, rather than R&R (rip out and replace).

I LOVE 1984 king cab 4x4 720 pick-up..Parts are easy to find and affordable.. I am totally restoring with 238,00 miles on it.. Although I have found 1 large problem.. I can't seem to locate a brush guards like in the old ads for them.

If anyone knows where 1 is please e-mail me at sflemin1@comcast.net.

I love my '84 KK 4x4. It's also got the 'cream' *tan* paint, which is kind of uncommon. There's nothing solid like a Nissan, and the amount of swapping you can do is unbelievable. My only complaints are the underpowered engine and weak diffs, but it isn't hard to swap in a KA24DE or VG30DE and some Frontier diffs. Like sflemin1, I would love to get hands on a new set of overfenders, but it seems they are long gone.

I used to have an a 84 Nissan pickup reg cab, when I got it had the cream paint and body was rotted to the ground, but it ran great even with a blown head gasket, I totally restored the body and fixed the head gasket. Finding body parts for the bed of that truck was extremely hard, I pretty much made the panels for the bed, when I was done with it, it looked awesome though, it had a 3in lift on it, chrome roll-bar and brush guard, I put a header on it, it did good for being as old as it was on all of the original drive-train, when I sold it, it had 210,000 miles on it, and I still see it running around to this day, those trucks really were built to last.

I recently purchased a 1984 Nissan King Cab with a blown head gasket for a $1000, and it only has minor surface rust. Z24 engine. Was running, but poorly... Me and my dad are rebuilding part of the engine and are almost done with it... So far it seems like a strong truck though especially with 280,000 miles LOL the cylinder heads and walls are perfect! This will be my daily driver while I build my fully custom Jeep. Part aren't too expensive except replacing the entire head cam etc...

I have just inherited my grandfathers 82 Nissan Datsun truck with only 70,000 miles on it. She ran like new, but when he died, it sat around for too long and now needs some repairs. I'm working on all of these things myself, and was wondering if anyone knew where I could get some replacement OEM interior components such as the console? Please email me at vinniecol@gmail.com Thank you very much.

Hello.

I work at the Nissan plant in Smyrna, TN. There are a lot of old Nissan trucks around here (have made them here since the '84 MY) that are not rusted out, due to the mild winters. I would monitor Craigslist Nashville as well as search the web for salvage yards in Rutherford County, TN for parts. If you use a common carrier and can wait a week or two, shipping shouldn't be too bad.

Courtesy Nissan Parts in Texas has a lot of old vehicle parts on their web site, though I haven't tried looking for 80s trucks. They are not cheap, but offer good quality parts. Yahoo forums also has an old Datsun/Nissan trucks forum with a good membership base.

I bought my 84 King Cab 4x4 in Nov.1983. 315000 miles/ three trannies later it still runs well. I get 23 miles to the gallon, but I do have to run super. I just replaced the original alt. two months ago. Rust is not a problems in the high desert of California. My main issue is the seats. Both have broken down and I need to get some after market seats in the near future. I'd rather get original, but can't find any good ones. I still use it for dailey driver.

My son Found a 1984 2x4 king cab sd25 diesel. I'm in the middle of rebuilding the motor. It took me 4 months to find all the parts, its been the most exiting treasure hunt I've ever been on. Now I have all the parts. When I get it running I'm sure I have the only one in North America. The rest of the truck is in perfect shape. Is there any other Diesel 720 PUs out there still running? laubfam4@msn.com.
