1996 Nissan Primera 2.0 SE Autom. 2.0L. 125 bhp from France

Summary:

Understated and reliable quality car

Faults:

Front suspension joints needed to be changed, as a clapping noise indicated. No big deal, either financially or work-wise.

General Comments:

A well built and serious family car.

The engine runs like a clock, will roar or purr on request.

Better build quality than most European rivals: it feels very safe.

Fuel consumption remains reasonable for an automatic gearbox, if far from exceptional.

Aerodynamics are nothing to write home about: whistling sounds above 120 km/h.

I beg to differ from most opinions: I enjoy the understated simplicity of the cabin. Nothing plain or sinister, just functional and low-key. Hey, some BMW cabins are far gloomier...

It's a great car for all of those who rather not to make a statement with their car (in France, of course, the Primera doesn't have the "minicab image" I understand it is afflicted with in the UK).

1996 Nissan Primera Equation 1.6 Twin Cam 16v from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Good spacious car. Cheap to insure. GREAT!

Faults:

Brakes started squealing and heating tremendously at 80,000 miles. Replacing the brake pads, and cleaning and re-greasing the calipers hasn't helped.

The fault was caused by metal flashing on the ends of the pads created from the brake pad molds. Filing these off solved the issue.

General Comments:

The suspension is extremely stiff, so the car takes corners and the motorway superbly.

The boot is absolutely enormous.

A months worth of shopping for a family of 4 fits nicely.

Been up and down from Edinburgh to Newcastle several times. Drive is so comfortable, you think it's a trip to the shops.

The 1.6 engine is economical when you drive it moderately, but push the accelerator down harder and it eats the go go juice.

The cabin is spacious, if a little dull.

But a bit of Armour All sorts that out.

Sunroof is fab.

1996 Nissan Primera SRi 2.0 16v from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Superb car, decent performance, good price!

Faults:

I somehow managed to blow a fuse when I fitted my radio, which appears to have reset the odometer to zero!

The clutch went about 3 weeks after I got the car. The dealership replaced it for me free of charge, even though it's not covered under the warranty.

General Comments:

I'm really impressed with the car. I've had Nissans before, without any problems.

The bucket seats are comfy and hold you in place well.

You need to get the revs pretty high to get it to shift, but this is normal for 2 litre cars. Once you do get the revs up it shifts well.

The suspension is pretty hard which means it handles really well, however this means you can get a bumpy ride on some roads.

All in all I'm happy with the car, especially for the price!

1996 Nissan Primera Equation 1.6 twin cam 16v from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Fantastic family car, with a boot to match!

Faults:

Well I have just got the car. But I thought I should add the "Equation" Model to the Survey.

I am currently having to replace the radiator. Man this thing is finished! 90% of it is gone! I can see right through the thing! Obviously hammered to death by the previous owner!

Front shock absorber's are so stiff they are non-functional! They'll be getting replaced soon too.

General Comments:

Other than the above mentioned items, this car is a dream to drive.

The steering is responsive and takes the car exactly where you point it.

You can go round a sharp bend in the road at 60 and not even know it!

Superb motorway cruiser. Although slightly under powered.

Still it gets the job done and being a Nissan it will last forever.

The 16 valve element of the engine eats the petrol if you press it. But under normal driving a tenner will get you far!

Interior trim is of superb quality, perhaps a little dull, but well put together and doesn't fall apart.

The sunroof is a god send!

And as for the boot! Darn that is so cavernous, you could easily get lost in it!

1996 Nissan Primera SRi 2.0 petrol from UK and Ireland

Faults:

Nothing.

General Comments:

Yes, the suspension on the front clunks! Sometimes annoying, although this happened on my last car, another Primera - apparently Nissan say it's normal (both have had very low mileages).

Great handling, refined engine too, would buy another.

Faults:

No problems with the car after one full year of ownership.

General Comments:

I owned a Micra before the Primera and would give the same scores ie. good cars but the dealers I have encountered are terrible.
