1999 Oldsmobile Alero GL 3.2 liter V6 from North America

Summary:

The Alero is an incredible car

Faults:

There is an electrical problem that causes various warning lights to go off even when there isn't a problem.

The head cylinder gasket needed to be replaced, which was a $600 repair.

General Comments:

This car is the best car I have ever owned. I absolutely love it. It's sporty, maneuverable, and assured on the road. It's ballsy coming out of a stop and has decent passing power. The interior is well appointed and comfortable. My only wish is that they'd put in an even more powerful engine and gotten rid of the governor... this baby screams muscle car and could benefit from some extra power.

1999 Oldsmobile Alero 2.4L from North America

Summary:

Great all purpose, low cost sedan

Faults:

Front brakes have been replaced 4 times, with 3 of those requiring new rotors. Rear brakes have only been replaced once, at 76,000. Blower motor relay has been replaced twice.

General Comments:

Given the price of the car $16,000, the features and reliability have been above average. Great cargo room. Easy to get my son's car seat in & out. Comfortable, well laid out interior. Sure this car has had brake issues, seems like most GM models go through brakes faster than other makes; however, I have far fewer overall problems with this car than any other American made vehicle I have owned (never owned a car for 6 years until this on). Wish the Olds division was still around, they hit a Grand Slam with this car.

Summary:

It's a great car to own!

Faults:

The only thing that was needed on my car was a front end alignment.

I love the way the car handles.

It is a fast car and picks up speed really fast.

1999 Oldsmobile Alero GL from North America

Summary:

If you buy an Alero, have it check out first

Faults:

I just bought a 1999 Oldsmobile Alero in July. The day that I picked it out I was so happy.

The day I purchased it, the rotors where replaced, the owner said that they would last. It's only been 2 months and I now have to replace the rotors and the brakes. I know I bought it used, but I thought it was going to be a good buy.

When I apply the brakes the steering wheel shakes and the the brakes pulsate.

Also when I turn the wheel it makes a clicking noise. Sounds like I might need new bearings also.

My low tire pressure light is on and I have had my tire pressure checked and the guy at the service station said that it was fine.

My anti-lock brake light has come on and my trac off light is on to.

General Comments:

I am not going to trash my Alero, but, I wish I would have had it checked by someone other than their mechanic.

1999 Oldsmobile Alero GLS 3.4L from North America

Summary:

Overall, I am very happy with the old girl!

Faults:

I have only changed brakes twice and rotors once. Also front wheel bearings once. That's it!!

General Comments:

I have read all the negative comments about this car and feel bad for the people who had these problems. The only fault I can honestly find is that it is hard on gas. Could be my foot too, I guess.

1999 Oldsmobile Alero GL V6 from North America

Summary:

Nice styling, good handling, poor reliability

Faults:

Bad transmission at 32,000 miles. Entire transmission replaced by dealer.

Blower switch settings 1,2 stopped working at 20,000. Replaced by dealer.

Many small rattles in the instrument panel (especially in cold weather)

Water pump failing at 60,000 miles.

Intake manifold gasket leaking coolant at 60,000 miles.

Engine light on at 60,000 miles due to two bad sensors.

General Comments:

This car served us well until the 30,000 mile transmission failure (thank goodness it was still under warranty).

Since 30,000 miles it has been a disappointment. At only 60,000 miles coolant is leaking through the intake manifold gasket and this will be an expensive repair.

I love the styling and the performance, I'm disappointed in GM quality and reliability. This is my 3rd GM vehicle and I will going Japanese next.
