I purchased a 1996 Oldsmobile cutlass supreme, used for about $2700. Right away I had to replace the intake manifold gasket which I was told was replaced with a better stronger gasket that can stand up to the coolant issue. It does look like it will hold for a while and it cost about $700+. I also replaced the water pump and did an oil change, replaced the pcv valve and repaired a flat tire. Very recently the car started chugging a bit, but not much then one day chugged really badly and stalled twice. I drove it a long highway drive home 1 1/2 hours and then parked it, it won't start since. It turns over, but does not seem like its getting gas or a spark. I removed the air intake parts and sprayed gas into the choke/intake. Still not even a chug. I removed a spark plug wire and grounded it while someone cranked it over and it didn't spark once. I don't know where to go next I here there are a lot of sensors that are involved. Any ideas? or an order of most likely to least likely sensors, regulator, anything.

I purchased my 1992 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme in 1994 with just under 20,000 miles on it. Love the car for its comfort and basic reliability... until it got close to 100,000 miles when started having lots of problems: computer had to be reset (which took several times into the shop before they found the problem), driver's side window is off track, one trunk lid strut has broken off, dashboard lights/speedometer goes off and on at will, and today my SERVICE ENGINE SOON light came off and on sporadically during an out-of-town trip (couldn't happen in town...). I have the service manual, but can't find anything to tell me what the problem could be. I hate to put any significant amount of money into it due to its age and lack of value at this point, but will have it checked at my local Oldsmobile dealership tomorrow anyway. Hopefully it will be cheaper than buying a different car.

I also have a 92 and my dash light goes on and off. What I learned is if you push the middle where it says how fast you are going down pretty hard, they turn on for some time. I don't know why, but it works well for me anyway.

Has anyone replaced the A/C compressor themselves and how much of a pain in the rear was it to do? I don't have a lift and would be doing it on my back.

Hey guys. I got a 97 Cutlass Supreme LS. I've had it for about two years now from when I first started driving after my mom got her new car. It just hit 90,000 miles the other day and I have noticed several problems with it now.

Since I have gotten the car, we have had the brakes changed twice if not three times (once because the ABS light was on for about 4 months. It came on about a week after the first brake change).

The sunroof will not open all the way anymore.

Over the past couple of weeks now I have noticed that when pulling onto the highway, I can get it up to around 50-55ish on the on-ramp, but to reach a higher speed, I need to back off the gas and then REALLY, REALLY push it down to get it going.

Over the past few days as well I have noticed that it is over reving a lot. Especially if I'm at a dead stop.

Tonight when coming home from work, the steering wheel locked up twice on me, while rounding a corner. In order for me to get the car to finish the turn, I had to force the wheel in the opposite direction and then snap it back to finish the turn. And it was in both directions too.

There are problems with unlocking the car form the inside sometimes as well.

Feels like the car wants the back end to swing out from underneath me sometimes on the highway.

If anyone has any advice for me on what to do that would be super fantastic, as my parents are completely against me getting a new car, even though we have already discussed that I would be paying for everything and I have no problem doing so. either please post here or you can email me at millencolin1015@aim.com.

Thanks a bunch.

1996 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme SL

I purchased this car used from a dealer ship. They also offered an extended warranty. I purchased the car with 40,000 miles on it and also the extended warranty. I must say the warranty was most helpful. Regular maintenance was expected and some other costly repairs was covered under the warranty.

The car has all the bells and whistles offered on this year. I have over 162,000 miles on it now and regular maintenance and some long waited out fixes have trailed. I've replaced the water pump, thermostat, hoses, antifreeze, radiator, brakes and rotors if needed, blinker switch, changed fluid in the transmission, tires. Under the warranty new head gaskets where replaced and power moon roof was replaced. Very costly. Recently I've replaced the spark plugs and wires (overdo) and the shocks and struts (overdo). This is a 3.1 liter with 3 speed automatic with overdrive. I plan on purchasing another car for my wife and retiring this one for car shows.

I purchased my 1996 cutlass supreme from an auction. Since purchasing it I have replaced the heads within a month. Now the head lights, windshield wipers, trunk button inside the dashboard, or anything else in the front of the interior of the car works. I replaced the ignition three times when the car wouldn't start only to find that once I changed the fuses it cranked just fine. The rotors wear out really often. If anyone know how to solve my headlight problem please let me know.

I have a 1996 Cutlass Supreme SL and the parking brake light is on, even though the parking brake is not engaged. Any suggestions as to what is wrong?

I have a 1996 Olds with no heat or defrost, and after 5 minutes of driving, the temp light comes on and smoke comes from the hood. I keep putting antifreeze in; not helping.

Well if adding more isn't helping, then obviously something else is wrong. If the anti-freeze isn't physically leaking out of the vehicle, then the engine is burning it. Sure sign of a blown head gasket or faulty intake manifold gasket.

As for the guy with the wobbly crank pulley, I have had the same problem with one of my G.M. cars, and it is a cracked pulley, kind of a hard one to replace yourself. I did one and the main difficulty was getting the crank shaft bolt off; that bolt was a bear to get off. I think there was one more problem with the pulley; the rubber mount that separates the two pieces came out a little bit, and caused it to wobble and then crack.
