1978 Oldsmobile Delta 88 Royale 403 c.i. 6.6L. V8 from North America

Summary:

A speedy, comfortable, reliable car for a great price!

Faults:

The dimmer switch went out, and it was only $30.00 to replace it, plus labor.

Other than that, just general stuff, such as oil changes, etc.

General Comments:

I love everything about this car except the gas mileage. V-8's and four-barrels are gas hogs.

The engine still runs like the day it was built. I can smoke many other V-8's that I have run against. This baby will lay a patch. I have not had to to anything to it besides put new spark plugs and wires in. You will have that though.

The exterior and interior is great looking with only minor rust on the bumper. Barely enough to even notice it.

1978 Oldsmobile Delta 88 Royal Coupe 350 Gas from North America

Summary:

Bulletproof Detroit iron

Faults:

Speedometer quit working after driving down a flooded street.

Cruise control stopped working when the cruise did.

General Comments:

I have owned over 20 cars and this Delta 88 was probably the best car I have owned.

I paid $400 for this car to use a daily driver and winter car while my Mustang convertible was in storage.

I took several 1000+ mile trips with confidence, averaging over 20 MPG.

I bought the car from the Estate of the former owner. He had a notepad in the glove box with every gas fill-up date and mileage written down.

The body had some dents and a little rust, but the 350 Olds engine with it's 4 barrel carb was a work of art. Smooth, powerful and bulletproof. Could smoke up the tires with ease.

I regret trading this car away. I traded the Mustang and Delta 88 on a 89 IROC-Z which in turn blew it's engine.

For the year and a half I had the Delta, I put $150 in for tires, $150 for new brakes, $60 for an alternator, $75 for A/C recharge and oil changes. That is it. I was not easy on the car, I would run it hard. It took my abuse and wanted more. I still wish I had it. : (

1978 Oldsmobile Delta 88 Royale 350 V8 from North America

Summary:

Wish it was still around

Faults:

Dimmer switch, only "scheduled" maintenance.

General Comments:

This was actually my Dad's car, but it deserves some recognition. It was about the best car money could buy for $750. The 350 V8 was still smooth and powerful, I remember my dad smoking the tires and giving Camaros and Mustangs a run for their money. I wish GM still knew how to build cars like this. The car had no rust (amazing after 11 years in Minnesota). The car averaged anywhere from 15 to 21 MPG. Too bad some idiot had to run a red light and total it!!!

I have a '78 OLDS, that I bought in '94 for $2000. It was a one owner that was garage-kept. I rolled it to 164,000 miles and, unfortunately, threw a rod! I replaced the motor with a re-built, put in a new carborater, but it still runs kinda rough. I can't do any work myself, but I'm open to suggestions... This is the best car I've ever owned!
