1992 Peugeot 106 XSi 1.4 from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Fantastic and underated

Faults:

Fuel pump.

Exhaust.

Temperature switch for radiator fan.

Head gasket.

General Comments:

Is very quick for a 1.4, but has the 100bhp which really shifts between 30-60 mph.

Has as much torque as a North Korean hair dryer once you put one of more passengers in the car.

Problems I have encountered are expected on a car of this age. Rust is minimal on the body work, but have found some behind the rear wheels.

Pedals are a little close together, but you get used to it.

Interior upholstery is a bit weird and I'm not keen on the blue carpet. Peugeot did sort this out on the later 1.6 XSi, which had a slightly more refined interior.

Paint work started to fade on the roof a few years ago, I recommend not trying to polish it up, it just leaves circular marks all over the roof. The rest of the paint work is very good for a 16 year old car.

Motorways can grow tiresome as it sits at 4000rpm at 70mph. It is best suited on sweeping country roads, not long distance cruising.

Exterior finish is amazing and it has some great extras over the base model phase 1 106. The alloys are great looking, and the car itself is subtle enough to stop you looking like the idiots in the 90's who were crashing 205 GTi's on a weekly basis.

Remote central locking on a car of this age is surprising but it does need a bit of swinging your arm about to get it to lock/unlock.

Have a go in a 106 XN and then in a 106 XSi, and you will notice the difference. They put the 1.4 in some other models like the XS and the Roland Garros. But this is the 100hp 1.4 and was apparently quicker than the 205 GTi 1.6 back when it came out in 1991.

1992 Peugeot 106 XSi 1.4 from Greece

Summary:

Sweet but expired chocolate

Faults:

At 210000km fuel pump wiring had corrosion

At 210000km I changed steering gear

At 230000km I changed front trailing arms

At 235000km I changed electronic ignition coil module.

General Comments:

I bought this car in November 2006, third hand for only 900 euros (700 pounds).

Although in bad body condition, it's a very fun to drive car, it has good handling, and it is a very well balanced car between the two axles.

Mine has rear disk brakes from a Peugeot 106 1.6 16v, and a 24mm in tube torsion bar, with front coil springs and front/rear shock absorbers from a 106 1.6 16v.

The engine lacks torque at low rpm (1000-4000), but at higher revs it runs good.

It travels smooth up to 110miles/hour, but after that you must be very patient.

For its time this car was a little bomb, but today it's just a slow car.

I like it a lot, and I believe that when you buy a third hand Peugeot car with 200000km, you must expect reliability problems.

1992 Peugeot 106 XN 1.0 1.0L from UK and Ireland

Summary:

A Legendary Car

Faults:

The battery was half dead when I got it - replaced battery and now works fine.

There are cigarette holes on the drivers side seat - done before I had it.

It had no parcel shelf, boot liner or steering column plastic housing when I got it - all now purchased.

Drivers side seat needed welding back to the frame before I had it.

General Comments:

Its nippy - got it to about 85-90mph and it's a 1.0L! However I could smell the engine (haha) so slowed down.

No rust whatsoever.

Seats are comfy, pedals too close together unless you wear the right shoes.

Cheap to run - I am a student and I can afford it.
