1989 Peugeot 405 Mi16 1.9 16v petrol from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Bargain for the kind of performance

Faults:

Timing belt snapped causing valves to bend, repaired and still runs fine but the exhaust constantly gets a leak from the manifold even though it has been put together several times.

General Comments:

Good performance, many people underestimate its ability. Brilliant road holding.

1989 Peugeot 405 MI16 1.9 petrol from Australia and New Zealand

Faults:

Heater flap motor and new starter motor brushes.

General Comments:

Best handling front wheel drive car I have driven, even faster with a powerchip on premium unleaded than our crap normal unleaded fuel.

I have had it 3 years now, it's a very strong car and it's still going like new.

Only real problem is the service I used to get from my dealer, they used to do a poor job and tried to rob me once saying the car needed a new knock sensor when it obviously only needed a new fuel filter, saving me $250 (how many people do you think they do that to).

I think mechanics here do that a lot of the time. Many times have I had it that I was told I needed something replaced, only to get a second opinion somewhere else, where it wasn't even mentioned.

I think this happens all over the world. Even in Malta, being a car dealer I face many of this kind of problem myself. I think the solution is that you need to get to know in general what your car consists of so that you tell your mechanic what to do, not him telling you. If he sees you do not know anything about cars he will charge you a lot because he will convince you that he has worked a lot.

1989 Peugeot 405 mi16 1.9 16v petrol from UK and Ireland

Faults:

ABS pump, thermostat housing leaking continuously no matter how much gasket sealer and paper I used. Brain went dead.

General Comments:

The fastest car I have ever driven.

150+ clock speed, stuck to the road like glue, and took bends like they did not exist.

1989 Peugeot 405 DL 1.9 8v petrol from North America

Faults:

Rallying, I hit a rock and put a hole in the oil pan. Rebuilt engine, put in a 5 speed transmission. My fault only.

Temperature sensor went bad, car has 106,500 miles on it though.

General Comments:

Great car all around, best seats I've ever had in a car. Great performance, I wish I had an mi16 but this will have to do. Only 1 factory authorized repair shop in town, but I live on the west coast.

Faults:

Brakes failed (Around 75k).

Sticky sunroof.

Dodgy alternator (75k).

General Comments:

Handles brilliantly for it's size.

Pretty quick.

Cheaper to insure, when considering performance, in comparison to other cars.

1989 Peugeot 405 GL 1.9 from UK and Ireland

Faults:

Bulbs in centre console gone, speedo broken, front and rear shocks worn, cam belt worn, horn broken.

General Comments:

A nice looking saloon, reasonably cheap to run for its size. Very spacious. Basic features such as Central Locking and Sunroof on the model I've got, but the GR, SRi and Mi16 have more to offer.

Regular wear items such as water pump, timing belt, CV joints, brakes. Non wear items such as climate control temperature servo.

A great driver's car - Peugeots represent unparalleled value for the "used car enthusiast" in the United States.

1989 Peugeot 405 GR 1.9 petrol from UK and Ireland

Faults:

Head gasket, gear selector cable, tailgate struts, alternator, suspension bushes, CV gaiters, brake pads, hand brake cable, front sidelight, three dashboard lights. (All in the space of one year!)

General Comments:

Perhaps this was a Friday afternoon car but it's been the least reliable car I have ever owned. Apart from that it's comfortable, quiet and roomy. As it's automatic, it's not very economical.
