Faults:

Power Steering effected by a very old fan belt, this was fixed by replacing the belt.

Clutch cable needed adjusting because it was causing the gear change to crunch.

General Comments:

This is the second 405 that I have had, both with the clutch cable problem, easily and cheaply fixed.

A lot of reviewers complain about servicing these cars, but they are great to service yourself, and most problems can be easily and cheaply fixed.

Faults:

Both rear brake calipers failed and are expensive.

1 universal joint bellow failed.

2 years of computer problems, nobody can properly diagnose it or fix, very time consuming and expensive.

Maybe something to do with rain not flowing properly out of the Ecu chamber which is right next to the windscreen.

The wires that feed the horn failed and needed to be replaced, very time consuming.

General Comments:

Handsome car with very good and sharp handling.

Soft pliable ride, amazing for such a sporty setup, only the French can do this.

Thirsty even if you drive slowly.

Noisy interior trim, and parts will break over time.

Faults:

Mainly carburettor problems, and general bad running.

Constant ignition problems. The car cuts out at the most inopertune moments!!!

A swimming pool is developing in the boot!!!

Electric sunroof fails to close once open.

General Comments:

This is the most unreliable car I have ever owned, my head was buried under the bonnet every weekend, most days I felt like Basil Fawlty and beating it viciously with a branch!!!

Faults:

Two weeks after buying the car the A.B.S. (anti-lock braking system) warning light was constantly illuminated along with the "STOP" light, but still had good working brakes.

One week later the break fluid reservoir started smoking and the A.B.S. fuse kept blowing, which resulted in total loss of brakes (scary!). A computer diagnostic at a Peugeot dealer revealed a number of faults to the cost of £600 including a new A.B.S. computer, a new brake fluid reservoir, and labour.

Replaced ball joints.

Replaced drive shafts/C.V. joints.

Engine overheating, replaced thermostat.

Electric sunroof won't close all the way due to a worn gear in the motor assembly. Peugeot supply a repair kit (to my surprise) for this common fault.

Water leaking into boot, renewed boot seal, still water leaking into boot, can't figure where the hell it's coming from.

I decided to strip out the interior side trims which revealed water running down the back pillars, past the back shelf and into the boot. I had to have the back window re-sealed to fix the problem.

Electric window switches very tempremental. I find that dust can cause a bad connection inside the switch unit, especially when they haven't been used for a while.

The idle control valve (compensator) needs replacing at a cost of £200 to my amazement. It's only function is to provide a smooth idle speed.

Can be unplugged if it plays up to much.

General Comments:

This has got to be the best car I've ever driven for performance and handling even though it still has the standard 160bhp.

This car has given me hours of driving fun and sure does keep me busy in the garage.

The sporty exterior styling is complemented with a full black leather interior.

Still runs well at 11 years of age and with over 140k on the clock.
