1991 Peugeot 405 GR 1.6 monopunct injection from Romania

Summary:

A nice sport family car

Faults:

Well a lot of things. Like the suspension, the engine. The water went into the oil.

I changed all the parts from the brakes.

I have problems with the doors. They open and close very hard. My girlfriend is furious by this problem.

General Comments:

The car is in very good shape. It has no rust on it. I hit the car in the front left headlight, and I don't have money to change it. It cost like 50euro a new one.

I have no handsteering assistance. At the parking I have problems. Especially I am using it in town. The consumption is 11 l/100km, in town and 8 l/100km outside towns (at 150km/h cruise speed).

The car is not very strong, I need more horsepower than the 88 that I have.

1991 Peugeot 405 SRi 1.9 petrol from Portugal

Summary:

A car for families and drivers, that still amazes many new 2.0 liters owners!

Faults:

Only the usual replacements had to be made.

Interior started do get old and worn, or it wouldn't be French.

General Comments:

It was a fantastic car! A perfect compromise between performance, handling, comfort, space an economy.

It had the essential equipment to me - air conditioning, electric sunroof, electric windows, central locking and power steering.

The thing I liked the most is that appeared to be less than it really was.

1991 Peugeot 405 GR 1.9 from UK and Ireland

Summary:

10000 miles trouble free motoring for £140. cannot fault it. At this stage every mile is a bonus

Faults:

Electric sunroof did not work on purchase.

Wire to starter motor came adrift causing a non start. 5 minutes to diagnose and fix.

Central locking has a mind of its own.

Heater blower noisy.

General Comments:

Purchased from 'Bloke' (you all know the one!) for £140 as a cheap second car. Been utterly reliable.

Comfy to sit in.

Big boot. -it's my mobile shed.

Uses a bit of oil, but no water.

Gearshift notchy.

Handles pretty well.

1991 Peugeot 405 406 GTXi 1.9 from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Fantastic car, the GT Xi is a rare car now, but if you can find one get a hold of it

Faults:

Had a clutch problem at 119.000 miles, this was caused by a slack clutch cable easily remedied by slight tightening, resulting in replacing the clutch at 123.000 miles (only second time to be changed plus it was an ex company car)

Other than that no other problems.

General Comments:

Fantastic car!!!

Would still have had the car if it wasn't written off because of some idiot in a Rover 214.

Slight damage to my car, Rover was destroyed. Written off due to age otherwise good solid car no rust.

I loved it, all the power you could possibly want under your foot.

1991 Peugeot 405 S 1.9 from North America

Summary:

A wonderful experience in motoring

Faults:

The speedometer cable snapped at 100,000 miles.

When I attempted to replace the passenger side tie-rod end, it was seized to the internal steering shaft, and the entire steering rack had to be replaced.

The fuel pump is noisy in cold weather.

I would replace the CV axles if I could find replacement parts.

The headlight dimmer switch ratchet broke at 175,000 miles.

The cruise control switch on the steering column has had to be replaced twice.

General Comments:

The Peugeot 405 S is the most reliable automobile that I have owned. Other than the minor annoyance of limited parts availability, I will probably get another 100,000 miles out of the car.

The car handles better than most high performance vehicles that I have had occasion to drive. Cornering is precise, and braking is superb, as long as the anti-lock system doesn't activate.

The ergonomics of the driving position and controls makes driving the car seem as natural as walking.

Fuel consumption has averaged close to 30 miles per US gallon for the life of the vehicle, even when driving at high speeds.

1991 Peugeot 405 Mi16 1.9 petrol from North America

Summary:

A legend in its own time

Faults:

Broke engine mounts twice.

Broke two pulleys.

Many cooling problems.

Besides that, nothing.

General Comments:

This is an amazing car. Once passed 4000 RPM the car is a beast. You can easily take higher horse power I-4s And V6s. Off the line you must spin the wheels a little to keep up. But once you get to about 65-70mph you'll hit 110 in a heartbeat. I had the car up to about 128mph, and it had minimal rattling and still handled beautifully.

And of course you get all the goodies with it, leather/power/heated seats, power sunroof, tilt steering, cruise control, power/heated mirrors, AC, power locks, 4 wheel disk with ABS brakes, 15 inch Speedline wheels, 195/55 15 VR tires, fog lights, and the stock radio receives TV stations! How can you beats this? In its time this was the car to have.

In my car, I re-did the audio system and lowered it about an inch and a half in front and rear. I got springs imported from UK. Exhaust and intake also. (Guesstimate about 160Hp) I wish that Peugeot would come back to the states, I would love a new 406 coupe.
