Some electrical problems with headlights, very minor valve cover oil leak.
Overall a very reliable and economical car. I am still very happy with it after 11 years and 200,000 kms. Kinda wish I bought a new one in 2000 the last year they were produced. This car is great for hauling all sorts of things with the rear seat folded.
Yes, I wish I had bought one too, in 2000. I have a 95 metro and I love it. I am always looking to find a good used one. I would not buy any other car. Suzuki motors are the best.
I purchased a 1995 Firefly brand new & still have it 12 years later, still going strong! I have never been more pleased with any car I've ever owned than with my Firefly. Currently I have 300,000kms on it & counting, with the original battery, alternator, & engine. I have been extremely pleased with it's reliability & gas mileage, having up to 67 miles to the gallon. You got it Pontiac!!
Brian.
Update. I am the owner of this 95 Firefly. It now has just under 250,000km on it. I have spent a little bit the last couple of years. I had to do the cv joints and deal with the oil leak as it was no longer minor in addition to other normal wear and tear items for a vehicle of this age and mileage. I am still pleased with this car and think I have definitely got my money's worth $ 12,000 purchase price on a vehicle that will probably last me a few more years.
I just bought a 95 Firefly for $200 and it seems to run fine so far. I noticed the passenger headlight is very dim and a slow oil leak coming from somewhere. My mechanic is checking things over now. Other than that, I think I got a pretty great deal. It's at 193 000 and in very good condition.
Any suggestions? Thx, Chris.
1995 Firefly.
The seats are very comfortable and I find the car handles well. I do have a crank shaft leak that would cost $1000. to fix, but choose not to since I can just keep filling up the oil. I notice a distinct clicking in the steering wheel whenever I turn it to the left.
Overall, I think it's a good little car for 187000 km's.
I see the leak in my 95 Firefly (above). Could be the crank shaft also. Very slow leak. I also hear the clicking when turning...
I had to fix the headlights as the front left was not working. Luckily, I have a great mechanic who had to pretty much rewire the whole front to get it working again. Great car so far...
Generally these cars with high mileage will have leaks and rust, same is true of all vehicles in the rust belt areas unless you are religious in cleaning and oil spraying the chassis.
The clicking you hear in the front when turning is the CV drive shaft. The boots have torn and the internal parts have allowed dirt in causing them to grind up. Common on all high mileage front drive cars, unless you use a rubber protectant on the boots, which for the average driver is highly unlikely.
They are a cheap fix at around $90.00 rebuilt or $ 125.00 new.
My motto is if the rust is not to severe them drive the car into the ground and just get another one. They are still plentiful and are cheap to buy. Only keep it if the body is rust free; the mechanicals are not that important, there are plenty of rust buckets selling for scrap prices with immaculate mechanicals that can be swapped over if you want to go to that much trouble.
A great site for repairing these is http://www.teamswift.net
