1994 Pontiac Grand Am SE from North America - Comments

"We should have saved our money and leased a new car"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

The brakes constantly wear out. I have had the coil tower go out on the highway on vacation. The alternator. The power steering pump. The fuel pump. The turn signal switch went bad. The heater core core blew. The rotors. the cam shaft seal. The head and gasket. The timing chain.

General comments?

The car is the money pit.

We have put at least 500-1000 dollars per year in maintenance.

We have been sorry we bought this car from the sart.

I find it highly undependable, entirely aggravating, and impossibly costly to repair.

Whenever we go to a mechanic and tell him it's a quad four motor, we get the "oh you poor sucker" reaction.

I agree, the Grand Am is a money pit. I am currently driving one with the third engine in a few years. Between carbon buildup, the timing chain, and now the turn signal switch, I am sick to death of this car...

I have a 1994 Grand AM SE. I bought it used with 138,000 miles on it. I have since put on 3000 miles. I travel 45 minutes to school every morning and being 17 I don't treat it very well. I beat the hell out of it. Every morning it starts right up and sounds great. I have found my experience with my grand am to be quite the opposite. I enjoy its smooth right and reliability. The only problem I have had was with the power locks (which no longer work) but according to my mechanic it can be easily fixed. I'm sorry to hear about your experiences with the Grand Am I and hope you give it a second chance. The 98 - 03 models have many new improvements which offer an even smoother quiet ride with a great sporty look. Best of luck.

I have a 94 grand am with 100,000 miles on it and the engine is great. It has a 3.1 SFI and there is nothing wrong. I think you just ran it to hard.

I Bought my Grand Am about a year ago with 80 k miles, within the first month I needed a new motor. Within the course of a year I got a new alternator, which I thought was a problem with the battery so a new battery also. There is a leak in heating core, which means I put anti-freeze into it about once a week. The horn is broke. Driver's side window is off track. Passenger's side seat doesn't adjust. Last inspection I got new breaks. Inspection, that cost me $300 for new brakes and rotors, was about 2 weeks ago. The current status, its parked on the side of the road, unable to be driven I was driving when I came to a stop and the car was shaking. I was only a minute away from the house, but the car lost all power, and would barely make it up a hill. I had a family known mechanic check it out, he gave it a tune up and checked the motor mounts, that wasn't the problem. I can't bring myself to take it to the shop and put anymore money into this car that is almost worthless. Also about a month ago I was driving when the vehicle starting shooting fuel from under the hood. Before that the brakes, literally just stopped working. For all the prices I've paid I could have invested my money in a more expensive reliable car.

Also, if your power looks aren't working check to see if the car lighter is jammed. I also I had a problem with my locks and when I took the lighter out, the locks worked.

Although I have one, and its got 200k, the only problem is power lock doors!Yes they are a problem, even when the fuses seem fine!
