1995 Renault 19 RT 1.4e from UK and Ireland

Summary:

I love my Renault 19RT

Faults:

In previous 19's (I have owned 4 to date) overheating has been a problem, but just keep an eye on the water temperature and you'll be grand - if the fan stops working it's probably just the thermostat (cheap to fix).

The heater matrix went in 2 of them, which is an absolute nightmare to fix, and you will be wearing a heavy coat and possibly gloves in winter!

Just general wear and tear, things you'd expect to replace on a car 6-7 years old.

The light switch (to change between dip & full beam) went at 100,000 miles, but I've a new one in and if it lasts to 200,000 I'll be happy enough!

Don't buy parts from a dealer as they're rip-off merchants.

Insurance is high enough (Group 8).

General Comments:

The seats in the RT are the most comfortable I've ever sat in - quite a few passengers have commented on this - and the head rests are pure class!

Unfortunately I've outgrown this wonderful motor and now require something faster - maybe a Clio 1.8 16v or maybe just a R19 16v!

1995 Renault 19 16valve 1.8 16v from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Quick car not really appreciated

Faults:

Drive shaft knocking. replace.

New cam belt changed at 70000.

Water pumpleak.

General Comments:

Decent looking quick car.

Poor below 4000 revs. Have to keep the revs up for racing.

Standard handling good out handles majority of cars round country lanes.

Love hearing that limiter.

125mph in 4th not many newer cars can do that can they?

Leather seats are a must.

1995 Renault 19 1.4 Energy from Denmark

Summary:

Comfortable

Faults:

Coolant leak (minor repair).

Rumbles when you release the gas pedal from high RPM (minor repair).

General Comments:

Lots of space on the back seats. More than in the Audi. 10 cm of space between my knees and the back of the front seat when my tall friend is driving.

Quick when you drive alone or with one or two passengers. But you can really feel the difference when you are four adults with some luggage. It's still OK though.

Very silent at speeds below 100 km/h, but noisy at higher speeds.

I've had some problems with the car in the short time I've owned it. If you're buying one, test it carefully first.

1995 Renault 19 RL Europa 1.9 diesel from Belgium

Summary:

Rusty, but comfortable and economical

Faults:

I had to put in a new radiator twice, and replaced a rubber water hose. The previous owner put in a new water pump.

I also replaced the rear brake cylinders, rear and front brake pads, all glow plugs and the battery.

When the car was five years old, several rust spots started to emerge (all doors).

General Comments:

Renault does not want to do anything about my rust problem, because I mostly serviced the car myself (!). The reasoning behind this, is that, while servicing the car, it has to be checked for rust by the Renault mechanics. I took it to the garage for servicing twice, and they never checked the bodywork.

I find the R19 a very comfortable car, although the seats are a bit too small.

It is quiet for a diesel, and performance is reasonable as well.

Fuel consumption is low (6 l/100 km).

It sounds like you bought a lemon there.

Did you buy the car from a boy racer or a bad garage?

My R19 been a very good.

And never had the things go wrong you said.
