I've found this page searching the Internet for why my girlfriend's 51 plate 1.2 16v Renault Clio constantly loses power and what feels like little misfires whilst driving steadily. Doesn't tend to happen if accelerating hard more so just keeping at a constent speed. The best way to describe it is driving in the wrong gear.

Its got to the stage where it was 'missing' or losing power every 30 seconds... and the engine does not respond to the accelerator even if put into neutral. Today the coil light came on and the car broke down completely. I was able to start it straight away but continued to miss all the way to work.

I read about the little metal box behind the engine and checked mine. Low and behold it was completely loose and had chopped two wires to bare metal. I repaired this by melting a suitable plastic onto the wires to re-insulate them.

I also read about the ignition coils being a usual suspect for causing the problems so pulled them off the spark plugs and refitted.

The journey back to work it didn't happen once but still is slightly missing and chugging. 100 times better so would advise all to check these things first before taking it to a garage.

PEOPLE SHOULD SERIOUSLY REPORT THIS TO BBC WATCHDOG!! I AM. Renault seem to neglect their responsibilities with common manufacturing defects just like they did with the bonnets flying open.

Hi again.

Mine's the 1999 Clio RT 1.4. So try everything I can think of with this and go looking for the black metal box but can't find it. Admit defeat because she is still cutting out and take it to garage. Mechanic informs me that my car doesn't have the metal black box because is too early a model. So now I'm cheered up a little bit and think I'm alright and won't have hundreds of pounds worth of bills to pay. ask the mechanic to put it on a diagnostic (which thankfully is only going to be £20). Does that for me, rings me up and says, diagnostic is clear, can't find anything wrong. Arrggghhhhh! AND she is still cutting out on some trips. I did tell him that it always does it when I depress the clutch, so he said it may be a faulty stepper motor - as there is no timing on this car? I'm confused and fed up now. He said he'd cleaned the throttle bodies but these were'nt majorly gunked up or anything. This hasn't made a difference. So far around £80 spent on car and still not fixed. fab.

I had to drive my stuttering '02 1.6v Clio to leicester the other day and within a few miles I was in traffic with the engine management light on and the car stuttering, the tank was fairly low so I pulled in and decided to fill up with the premium unleaded having read a few people say it made a difference. Without giving it much thought, after some grub, we drove off and the light didn't reappear, it stayed that way for a whole week and drove great.

The following weekend I put in £10 worth of supermarket fuel from Jamie Olivers friends and within the first mile of driving the car went into 'limp mode', stalling at traffic lights and failing to pull away with any power. I made it to a duel carriageway where I used up as much fuel as poss before pulling over and filling up with the premium petrol again - as soon as I did, car fine again!

I can't explain it but definitely a quick fix to my problems, for now...

Can someone help? My 51' plate Clio has died. I have had the same problems as everyone else ie service light on, airbag light on and leaking sunroof. Every now and then the orange coil light comes on and the car grinds to a halt. I drove to work yesterday and all was fine but when I got back out to the car to go home it was dead. There is nothing at all when I turn the key. There is a clicking noise coming from the engine and all of the lights come on although the battery light is the only one that flickers. We have tried changing the relay and giving it a jump start but there is absolutely no response. It won't turn over at all. Has anyone else had experience of this and if so how was it fixed and probably more importantly will it cost me a fortune?

04 1.2 16v Clio, want to set it on fire, had it into a Renault garage and an other 3 times with lack of power/response, trouble with mine is I don't get a warning light so no fault codes, so as far as modern mechanics are concerned, no fault light=no fault code=no faults!!!

Going to PX for a Japanese car ASAP.

Here is a reply from Renault regarding my Clios poor running;

Thank you for taking the time to contact our Customer Services department regarding the issues with your Renault Clio.

I am sorry to hear of the problems that you have experienced to date and would like to take this opportunity to sincerely apologise for any inconvenience caused. Please rest assured that customer satisfaction is of paramount importance to us and your comments and feedback are vital in allowing us to achieve this. I will ensure that your feedback is forwarded to the relevant department.

I have taken the opportunity to examine your vehicle on our central database and can confirm there are no outstanding quality assurance programmes available for your vehicle; this means we are not aware of any inherent issues across the range.

We pride ourselves on the durability and technical excellence of our vehicles so when one of our customers experiences a problem, we treat it very seriously. I can confirm that our Renault dealer network have highly trained Renault technical experts who can assist with any poor running problems. However, intermittent faults are more difficult to locate. Sometimes, the fault is not apparent at the time of diagnostics.

If this is the case then Renault dealers will often suggest that the vehicle is left with them so they can try to recreate the fault. The Renault dealer will provide a courtesy car as subject to availability so you are caused the least inconvenience. The Renault dealer will not charge you to use their courtesy car. However, they may ask that you insure it yourself.

Should you wish to discuss this matter further, then please do not hesitate to call me on our free phone number: 0800 072 33 72 during 08:30 - 18:00, Monday to Friday.

Thank you again for taking the time to contact us.

Kind Regards.

Re post above (number 320, comment from Renault)

There's a brush off letter if ever I saw one. Keep the letter, print off every one of these messages on this forum and send them to head of Renault UK, Top Gear, Watchdog and every national tabloid you can find.

How's about it? If I'd received that letter I would too. Take the point about intermittent faults, but over 300 people (give or take for double posters etc) with roughly the same problem? Don't wee on my leg and tell me it's raining.

Tut.
