1999 Renault Scenic RXE 2.0 petrol from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Put me off ever buying another Renault

Faults:

The starter packed up in the middle of London, two days before Christmas. Necessitated a tow back to Devon. Defective wiring loom.

DREADFUL fuel filler flap. Tinny and nasty.

Engine mounting came loose.

Gearbox mountings are useless. Stick shakes like crazy.

Poor interior finish. No usable glovebox, and maps etc just slide off the dashboard. WHY in God's name don't car manufacturers make dashboards and glove compartments etc that you can actually USE.

General Comments:

Reliable, but never had that "I want to keep it" factor.

Getting the starter out means removing the front driveshaft. Absolutely ridiculous. Should be a maximum 1hr job. Who the hell designed THAT.

Rusts too easily around the wheel arches.

1999 Renault Scenic 1.4 16v from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Excellent urban MPV

Faults:

Water pump at 80000 miles.

Window mechanism 100000 miles.

2nd Gear stiff when very cold, always has been.

General Comments:

Very good handling if you're brave enough.

Comfortable ride on even the longest journey.

Back seats are a great piece of practical design.

Masses of rear room with rear seats removed. (so easy to do)

Reasonably economical.

Utterly reliable.

1999 Renault Scenic RT Alize 1.6 16v from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Excellent Family Car. I would recommend it

Faults:

The windscreen wipers don't stop when switched off. They usually keep going for another 10-30 seconds and then stop at a random position usually in the middle if the windscreen. Probably a computer glitch.

Water leaks into the boot making carpet wet.

ABS light came on at 45,000 which was caused by toothed ring on drive shaft breaking.

Driver seat a worn.

General Comments:

Excellent family car. Well designed and versatile. Boot can take two small bikes and a buggy for family outings. Nice to drive and plenty of power in 1.6 engine. Handling not as sharp as a car, but you can't get everything.

The car has generally been reliable. Between 18,000 when I bought it and 53,000 miles now, it needed 3 oil/filter changes, 2 sets of brake pads and 2 front tyres. Back tyres are still the original after 53,000.

Unfortunately have to change it as our 4th child has just arrived.

1999 Renault Scenic Alize 1.6 petrol from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Perfect solution for a growing family

Faults:

Windscreen wipers with a mind of their own. Would self-park in the middle of the screen.

Cam belt snapped within 100 miles of the service interval for change.

General Comments:

I replaced my pride and joy - an MG F - to purchase this car, when we had our first baby. My choice was based on the 'lifestyle' presentation of the scenic.

On the whole, it's been a terrific car to own and run. It has lived up to all the expectations I had for an MPV.

Performance is a bit poor, once you fill it up with luggage, but it's only an 8-valve engine, so I don't really expect much else.

Our local dealer has been fine. They didn't offer any discount for the snapped cam belt, but the car was 4 years old, so that's fair enough.

General storage and load carrying is great, especially when you remove all rear seats.

I've been impressed enough to just order a new scenic 1.5 dCi 100, though the delivery time is bordering on unacceptable.

1999 Renault Scenic RT 2.0 from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Very good family car

Faults:

Gear box hard to change when slowing down.

It is now not starting properly, takes a few goes to start engine. It has been checked over and told nothing is wrong, but another scenic was in the garage with the same problem.

General Comments:

As a family car it is excellent.

No more having to bend down trying to put child car seats in and nearly breaking my back.

Lots of room and you feel safer being higher up from other cars. Only problem now is more people are buying them so you don't have the advantage.

I had the same problem, it was the water temperature module.
