I have a 2000 Fabia 1.4mpi. It was 3 year old when I bought it and 24,000 on the clock. The engine not running smooth; that you described sounds like a problem I had, my car has 70,000 on it. The problem is caused by the timing chain and the sprockets that it runs on being worn. Find a good mechanic and get him to replace the timing chain and the sprockets, and I guarantee your engine will run smooth like new. Mine is like a new car, couldn't believe the difference it made.

Just bought an MPi 1.4 8v 2003, with 42,000 miles on it. Idles between 900 and 1000, bit wavy. How much did the timing chain cost you to replace?

2000 Skoda Fabia Classic 1.4 from Caribbean

Summary:

I will not buy another Skoda or VW car in my life!!!

Faults:

Steering wheel has on-off work.

Stop sensor (EPIC) has lit 3 times and I have changed it 3 times.

AC bad odor: had to replace the AC filter under the dashboard, the source is fungus that grows in the fiber of the filter. The problem presented again so I just got rid of the filter. I have a friend with a 2005 Audi A4 turbo and he has the same problem.

Right windshield (failure in mechanism, does not go up or down).

Left windshield: 2 times I have had to change the elevation mechanism. I have a friend with a Jetta and another with a VW New Beetle and they have had the same problem.

Water pump: replaced because of leakage.

Coolant temperature sensor: replaced 1 time due to malfunction.

Door seals: Water leakage in the rain, replaced too.

Antenna: breakage due to the cheap plastic base. Had it replaced too.

Air Conditioning: Now only works whenever it decides to.

General Comments:

These are all the things that I have had to face just because one day a company decided to launch a beautiful, but unreliable car to the market without having quality components to support the product.

I will never buy a Skoda or VW car in my life, their service is just awful and expensive. And as if they were laughing at every costumer, they tend to repeat the same malfunction over and over in all models every year.

Take note of all the things that have happened to me and consider this before thinking that you are buying a cheap VW/Audi car, because cheap is not what you are going to face after you have to go over and over to repair its many problems.

Now I will just sell it and let someone else take care of this piece of _ _ _ _.

2000 Skoda Fabia Comfort 1.4 16v from UK and Ireland

Summary:

A great car

Faults:

Air-con not effective from delivery (as delivered in December took many months to find this out, needed re-programming.

Intermittent squeak from rear brake, dealer wanted to charge for £100 fixing as wear and tear, queried this at 15,000 miles.

Nothing else went wrong during warranty.

Broke mirror adjuster (beware - seems fragile, needed whole switch).

Occasional intermittent rumbling from rear brakes – something trapped?

Engine warning light came on one week after warranty expired, seemed to run OK, temperature sensor replaced.

Rattle from rear seat back – adjusted rubber stop.

Now squeak at top middle of dashboard, does it when going along and when a little up or down pressure on steering wheel, stops when area pressed in gently (any ideas how to cure).

Only other failure – one light bulb.

Still on original wipers.

General Comments:

Good performance, handling, ride, equipment value, economy.

Many passengers comment on it being comfortable, spacious.

Got used to throttle delay, makes for a smother reaction to accelerator movement.

Had problems with one dealer. Took in for repair, had forgotten to order part. At 4 year service did not do brake fluid change (noticed as not charged for fluid). When took back for this to be done given back with brake pedal going to floor if pressed for 15 seconds.
