1988 Toyota 4Runner SR5 2.4 petrol - 22R-E from Guatemala

Summary:

Sweet... too sweet

Faults:

Bought the car after sitting in a backyard for two years. Chassis was rusted, but no corrosion seen.

Rear suspension was very low; apparently it had been used for ferrying heavy stuff before.

Rear window was not working properly.

Transfer leaking oil.

General Comments:

This was the car I always wanted, and found it by chance. The SR5, all electric, sunroof, NICE!!! Repaired the minor problems quickly, and it was ready to go...

Got stolen in a four minute period in Guatemala City, and most likely the buggers will disassemble it and sell it for parts...

Never a Toyota again, they are too likeable in Guatemala.

1988 Toyota 4Runner SR5 3.0 liter V6 from North America

Summary:

Wonderfully unique body with an engine that is unstoppable, hardworking and rugged

Faults:

Minor issues mostly, given the age and mileage. Far exceeded expectations for any Toyota vehicle, and most definitely any other make.

My guess is the body will rust out before the engine quits. The down side of the early 4 Runner's was the fact the bodies rusted..

About 11 years ago, had a lot of rust cut out and the whole thing repainted etc, however rust has come back, and now I will let it rust out I think.

General Comments:

This car has been phenomenal in all weather conditions, very rugged great for off roading, driving in deep snowy, slick conditions.

In a collision this car always wins, partly due to high clearance and big metal fenders; when you ram your plastic car into it, they don't survive.

Great for hauling stuff around.

Great for camping and even sleeping in the back.

Have put a motorized scooter in the back on many road trips.

Fairly comfortable given its purpose. Seats still intact, no rips or tears in fabric, only recently showing wear.

The sun roof is awesome.

The down side is only the fact it has two doors, and it's not a down side for me the driver, but more for passengers trying to get in and out of the back seat, Due to high clearance and a bit of a tight squeeze, this can be challenging for wider passengers, or really short passengers.

1988 Toyota 4Runner 22R-E from North America

Summary:

The best truck I have ever had

Faults:

I have replaced the alternator once.

I have replaced the starter solenoid once.

I have rebuilt the rear window mechanism once.

I have had the brake pads replaced and replaced the front brake rotors at 315000km.

Seats are getting worn.

Arm rest is worn out.

General Comments:

Very good off road capabilities in stock form.

This truck has a cult following, so there are lots of aftermarket parts available, as well as fan websites.

High resale values, and lots of guys looking for first generation 'runners.

High quality design and build quality.

Great mileage for a tall four wheeler.

Not a lot of power from the 4 cylinder, but I still consider this to be a great engine.

Some mechanics will tell you that the 22-R engine is the best Toyota ever made, and I agree.

Every mechanic and car guy I know loves these trucks.

The only thing I don't like is the electric rear window.

1988 Toyota 4Runner SSR from Japan

Summary:

Over all the most dependable and efficient vehicle I've ever owned

Faults:

The rear window doesn't always work after putting hard top back on.

General Comments:

My 4runner (Surf) is the most reliable vehicle I've owned.

Even after off roading during a typhoon and being submerged for hours it started right up.

No leaks or noises after twenty years of Japanese traffic.

The little four cylinder runs great and keeps up with the Jeeps 4.0 in the mud and hills.

1988 Toyota 4Runner SSR 2.4 turbo diesel from Australia and New Zealand

Summary:

It looks great, extremely reliable and economical - buy one!

Faults:

My car has independent front axles and unfortunately the front right axle has lost some bearings and thus is slopping around in its casing.

Rear window and wiper are causing several trademark 'clunky' faults. Drivers electric window stops halfway up.

General Comments:

My car is actually a Surf, but they are practically the same. Overall I love my Surf, great little Turbo Diesel engine.

The plastics are typically 1980's quality, but is is my favorite car.

I sometimes drive it like it's a sports car, which I shouldn't do I know, but it goes really well.

I am a big fan of the really tight steering.

All things considered, for the age of the car and all, I would rate the car at a 9 out of 10.
