1990 Toyota Corolla DX from North America

Summary:

It's worth the time you spend to look for it.

Faults:

The starter had to be replaced or rebuilt every 3 months or so.

The interior is kind of cramped, if you're a tall person.

General Comments:

This car is one of the best cars with the strongest engine I have ever owned. It is completely reliable and it can definitely get you anywhere you want to go.

The only major problem with the car is the starter, and also the location of the starter. I believe in most models it is beneath the engine, as oppose to being on the top in other car types. It kept conking out on me every so often. I've run into a lot of Toyota owners with this particular model and year and they all seem to have the same problem as I did. I also found out from other mechanics that the starter was usually faulty in Corollas. Even still, the repair costs and the actual starter itself won't run you that much.

Roominess is another factor to consider when getting a car like this. It's practically a compact car, so if you have a family, I wouldn't recommend it. Also, the space isn't easy on taller individuals like myself. It's not a lot of head room, but you'll get over that the more you drive it.

I bought the car at a very high mileage and it practically ran like new!!! It's a shame I totaled it in a wreck. Why me!! However, even after I totaled it, the engine was still used!

1990 Toyota Corolla CSi 1.6 from Australia and New Zealand

Summary:

Reliable little snail

Faults:

Drainage channels have blocked up and the front driver's side fills with water in a storm.

Wipers need tightening frequently.

Radiator replaced.

General Comments:

Overall, the car has been exceptionally reliable. Its interior is staid, but well glued together, although it's a bit on the small side.

Performance is utterly breathless (3 speed auto) and it has quite a thirst for what it is (about 10L/100km). Gets there eventually, but I never expect a brisk getaway and I leave the overtaking for the Grannies in their new Corollas. Handling is spongy, but safe.

One of the most annoying things is that the tailgate (I have the Seca variant) has no handle. I will probably lose a finger or two soon.

The Toyota dealer where the car is serviced has been excellent.

1990 Toyota Corolla LE 1.6 from North America

Summary:

It is my second wife!

Faults:

Passenger (front) power window broke at 112,000 miles.

Water pump blew at 118,000 miles.

Some rust above the rear tires.

General Comments:

I love this car very much and I recommend it to everybody if you are looking for a "reliable" and economic car on gas.

Although I sometimes miss my 87 Celica on highway, this car also runs great and handles very good for a 90 1.6L Corolla.

I wish it was more comfortable although it is an LE trim.

This is really an excellent buy for such a car in her class in other brands.

It's me again. After a long time I found what I had written on here about my 91 Corolla. So, tell the truth I still keep it! As I said, it's my "second wife;" it's a marriage! As long as you are happy with that, it works. This is an old car now at 135K, but it still feels a great one and has a lot to go.

1990 Toyota Corolla DX 1.6 AG from North America

Summary:

An excellent car

Faults:

I had to replace the exhaust pipe 3 times.

Other than that since it has so few miles the only other thing I had to do was routine maintenance.

General Comments:

The cabin is not built all that well. Cheap plastic dashboard and cheap seats that are rather uncomfortable.

The outside of the car though is built like a tank. I have been in one accident where I was rear-ended. there was a scratch on my bumper whereas the other car, an 02 Chevy Malibu had major frontal damage.
