1991 Toyota Cressida GLX 7mge from Australia and New Zealand

Summary:

Awesome in every way

Faults:

Nothing really. At the moment it has a slight vibration when at the lights, revving a little too low I think. Got to have it checked out. Apart from that... the tyres wear out... I think.

General Comments:

Bought this car for $3,200 AUD and my previous Skyline was 23,000 AUD. The Cressida is a better car hands down. More comfort, more usable, looks okay, smoothest car ever made I reckon. Powerful, economical, reliable, safe, easy to do my own servicing... best car I've ever had by miles, and the cheapest one I've ever had.

I just bought it to go to and from the station for work... now I can't see myself buying anything else. I couldn't justify paying top dollar for a car when I scored this one for just over 3 grand, and it's better than anything that has come out recently under $50,000.

Congratulations Toyota, this one was built to last, no wonder you stopped making em... put you out of business. I'm never getting rid of mine, and nor should anyone else if they know what's good for em.

1991 Toyota Cressida GLX 3.0 from Australia and New Zealand

Summary:

Smooth car. Too much petrol. BHG

Faults:

I loved the car...

* Common problem with the Cressida. BHG (Blown Head Gasket)...

First I was scammed. When I checked the car... the guy warmed up the car before I came to see it. So I wouldn't notice it had BHG. I paid $2500 & drove home. Next morning, it started very rough. I thought something was wrong. I couldn't take it to mechanic because it was a long holiday. When I saw the mechanic, yes it had BHG. & answer from seller.

I took it to Consumer Affairs. They could not find the guy. In the Rego paper, it was from a dealer. I bought private... but in the paper it said I bought it from a dealer.

Which I never did. ACCC people can't help me because I was/assume buying it as private. They traced the dealer, but they can't help me.

The car is fine besides the engine.

I had it changed 2nd hand. But it was very rough, and 1 month later another BHG. Luckily I had 3 month warranty on the engine. So another engine from the wrecker. I don't trust the wrecker any more. They told me it is good engine.

After 3 months it starts very rough again. I think BHG you never replace engine. All you need to do is replace the head gasket. Don't listen to wrecker mechanics.

After changing engine the twice... no more air conditioning.

General Comments:

The car is good. Drove very smooth.

Takes lots and lots of petrol.

It probably takes more petrol than a 3.8 or 4.0 Holden or Falcon.

I did research on drive.com.au about petrol usages. It was the wrong value.

The Cressida did around 350km with full tank of petrol.

It was really bad when the petrol price went up... But no more. I just traded it in... for a 4 cylinder.

I hope it is better.

1991 Toyota Cressida GLX 7MGE from Australia and New Zealand

Summary:

Too good to be true

Faults:

Nothing so far, only bought it recently.

General Comments:

Amazing value of money. I bought it for $3,000 AUD and it has everything a newer model car has. Only this one is quieter, has more class, and has to be the smoothest car available...still.

Pace under full throttle - this thing gets up!

I'm aware of the head gasket issues and am monitoring it all the time - careful not to push it for lengthy periods. Admittedly my previous car being a turbo R33 Skyline (pinched) I am a bit of a junkie for performance and intended to buy a sports car at the end of the year-Don't think I'll be able to justify spending 10 times the amount on a car after experiencing this Cressida GLX.

Interior is indestructible.

Paint work and condition - impeccable.

Performance - more than acceptable.

Mileage, not an issue.

Overall build and ride quality, Outstanding (I was a professional vehicle detailer) these cars were made to last forever and no wonder they stopped making em, no one would upgrade!

Awesome machine.

Yeah it is a great car. I had a 1990 model which I bought second hand in 1995. I just upgraded recently and I still think it drives better than any other car I've had. The only complaint is that it had serious head gasket issues a few years back and it wasn't the same since.
