1998 Toyota Sienna XLE from North America - Comments

"It's a lemon!"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Grinding noise in transmission. It was fixed per recall notice.

Improper tire inflation kept lit even with right tire pressure.

General comments?

The dealership (Sterling McCall Toyota Fort Bend, TX) fixed the problem, but the next day I had to return the van because the rear brakes "suddenly" made a loud squealing noise. My concern is that in 1997, there was a head gasket recall on my Toyota P/U, but I was told that my fuel injectors were leaking so to avoid having more problems "showing up" I agreed for them to replace two injectors that were supposedly leaking. I ended up paying over $600.00. I sense a pattern of "unusual" repair jobs as a consequence of "recall repairs " being performed. Are there anyone out there that have experienced the same?

From my experience, if Toyota has a recall campaign, and you have a problem that in every ways seems to be due to the recalled problem, Toyota and their dealerships will do everything to say it is something else, not related to the recall, or it is the owners fault. Are you familiar with the sludge recall campaign? It effects the engines of over 3.3 million vehicles, but so far from what I have read, Toyota has replaced only a fraction of those. If you think you have sludge, but Toyota says it isn't, go to an independent mechanic and get a second opinion. Also, if you own a sludge vintage Toyota which is the v-6 and 4 cyl. engines from 1997 to 2002, then make sure you change your oil every 3000 miles and keep the receipts or Toyota will blame the sludge on you..
