1981 Toyota Tercel SR5 review from North America

I replaced clutch and transmission at 130,000 Kilometers. I replaced CV joints several times--these were jobber replacement units and were guaranteed, but kept failing--so I blame the re-manufacturer of these parts. I replaced brake calipers 2 times--the originals lasted 15 years, but the jobber replacements lasted less than 2 years so I used units from another 1981 which was low mileage that I bought for parts. These lasted 3 years.

My previous posting was the one that said "I wish I could find another of these cars as I could make it last 20 years". Unfortunately, that particular vehicle was destroyed 3 nights ago by a hit and run pickup driver.

I have been able to find a 1985 4x4 Tercel wagon as a replacement for the written off vehicle--however, this has a 3-speed automatic and no overdrive so revs out badly at anything over 60 MPH--I would like to know if anyone knows if the 5 Speed transmission from the 1981 could interchange on the 1985 4x4--even if it means losing the 4 wheel drive function and keeping the newer vehicle as a front wheel drive.
