2001 Toyota Yaris GLS 1.3 16v VVTI from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Needs more traction

Faults:

I went up the curb at 50mph and all I needed was a wheel bearing and a new wheel.

Very well built.

General Comments:

This car is very quick.

I have had 122mph out of mine.

The car has massive interior diameters, but is tricky to control at the limit and around open raods.

2001 Toyota Yaris SR 1.3 petrol from UK and Ireland

Summary:

An reliable, good looking, `warm` hatch

Faults:

Nothing.

General Comments:

In caribbean blue metallic paint with subtle alloy wheels the SR Yaris truly looked the part. Coupled with aircon, single CD player and a host of other goodies now taken for granted (electric windows, for one) it was well equipped too. Performance from the 1.3 was brisk when needed though the characteristic of the VVTi engine meant revs had to be high to extract the most from it. Pulling away at low speed always felt as if the car was in the wrong gear - irrespective of what gear it was in!

Fuel consumption gave no cause for concern and 40mpg would be achieved in or out of the city with ease - high fortys being the norm on legal limit motorway journeys.

At 6` 4" I found the headroom (no sunroof) to be excellent along with the front leg room. The seats were satisfactory, but ideally suited for shorter journeys.

Not much can be added really. It always started first time, never gave any cause for concern, looks as fresh now as the day we picked it up and was serviced by a satisfactory (not brilliant) dealership at a reasonable cost.

Whilst we would buy another we have strayed from the Toyota marque after five years and two different Yaris models to Skoda, as much for a change as anything.

My wife collects her Fabia vRS next week which has a lot to live up to.

You are absolutely spot on. Road noise is there even at much lower speeds. The car must have poor sound insulation resulting in less weight which helps account for good fuel efficiency.

2001 Toyota Yaris S 1.0 from UK and Ireland

Summary:

What a lovely little car

Faults:

Not powerful enough, but what can you expect from a 1 litre.

Fuse box cover fell off, not a large problem.

General Comments:

This car is totally reliable, it hasn't failed me yet whatever the weather or when I last used it.

A fantastic first car, not much power, but is quite quick none the less because of the lightness of the car.

Lovely looking, nice and different from your run of the mill fiestas.

I would recommend this car to anyone for a small town run about, or as a first car to young people.

2001 Toyota Yaris GS 1.0 from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Pocket rocket!

Faults:

The fuses blew on several occasions.

General Comments:

The yaris must be one of the best cars available! As a boy racer I thought a 1.0 would have not compared to my nova, but the VVTi engine is fantastic. The boot has just enough room for my stereo equipment. If you buy a yaris get an aftermarket CD player fitted PROFESSIONALLY!!

The Toyota Yaris is a very nice little car, I can't see how anyone can dispute this, and yes comfort, looks and handling wise it will be better than a Nova. A wise choice for an upgrade.

However, the yaris has to be one of the slowest cars on the market, especially the 1 litre. The VW Polo, Fiat Punto, Vauxhall Corsa, Suzuki Swift and Fiat Cequento are all quicker than the Yaris. Saying that it wasn't designed as a boy racer car, it's a shopping basket.

From all the cars you have mentioned, the Fiat Punto would be the fastest, but only with 1.2 16v 80HP. But that would be unfair to compare it with a 1 litre engine.

As for another cars you mentioned, they are in fact slower than the Yaris, with its 68HP 1 litre engine that can accelerate it from 0-100km/h in 13.8 seconds.

The 1.0 Yaris is waay faster than anything similar. Mine was faster than a 1.4 Corsa! Anything 1.2 that's similar can't keep up!
