I currently have a 2008 Zafira 1.9 TDI in the garage for the 12th time with all of the usual electrical and mechanical problems that Zafira's seem to suffer.

We have this car for one more year on lease, we have tried to get out of the lease agreement as this car is just to unreliable for me to work, but to no avail.

I am currently using my wife's 14 yr old Volvo which has never let us down, my advice to anyone even contemplating getting a Zafira. Don't. Once your Zafira starts to develop faults (mine did after 5 months), Vauxhall will never cure them, and if they do, another fault will develop somewhere else.

So far...

CAT Failed.

Lamda Sensor 3 times replaced.

Air con pump destroyed itself at 10000 miles.

Rear brake sensor replaced twice.

Several other sensors replaced.

Radiator replaced.

ECU software re-written a handful of times.

Oil sensor replaced.

Boot lid resprayed as it developed rust bubbles in it.

Limp home mode so many times.

Economy is dreadful.

Loses power randomly.

Hesitates randomly.

Engine light on randomly.

Been told to not use it on short journeys, told not to use on long journeys, been told fuel economy is bad because it needs a service when the same dealer serviced it a week before.

Don't, don't, don't, don't buy a Vauxhall Zafira, I will never have another Vauxhall, ever.

Update on the post above, the car is now back from the garage, new fusebox fitted, and this will cure all faults, yeah right!

I will update this site once we have had a response from the lease company as we have told them we don't want this car anymore...

Help please, I have a 52 plate Zafira 2.0 DTi. It's going in to limp mode at speeds of 60mph or over. Or when going up big hills.

It is also smoking a little when you rev hard. The limp mode goes when you stop and remove the key, then restart.

I've removed the EGR valve, and gave it a good clean, then put a new diesel filter in.

Can you help?

1.6 Zafira Life (06).

I hope I'm not "jinxing" my luck so far with the wife's Zaff... It's only real fault I've found is rather poor fuel consumption and LOTS of flat spots (especially cruising on the motorway).

After reading all EGR related woes, I'm considering blanking the EGR and leaving it wired up.. hopefully no dash warning lights will come on!

All comments posted (EGR valve etc) happened to me. Are we waiting for a family to be wiped out before the real real culprit is brought to book? Surely Vauxhall must rectify this common problem. Sick to the back teeth of these death trap stories. Please can someone advise me. 6 in my family; can't keep forking out; still paying for this deathtrap for another year h.p.

I have a 52 plate 1.8 Zafira Elegance.

I had all the same as everyone else. Stalling, loss of power, high fuel consumption etc. The garage repaired the O2 sensor, then the EMU, then when it still did not work, blamed the cat and replaced that.

Eventually I got it back, but the garage was pretty cagey about exactly what they had done. It has worked fine for two months, but now will not start. It turns over, starts, but then dies and will not restart. The AA said I had flooded it and got it going again, but the problem has returned the next day.

Anyone got any matches?

My 03 Zafira diesel would not start. The glow plugs were still not starting. I read on here about a Zafira not starting and I followed their advise which was to change the crankshaft sensor. 20.00 later and now it's starting.

Now however, it is a tiny bit hesitant starting and also goes into limp mode at 3500 revs. Any help is appreciated.

Hi, I have a Zafira 03 diesel. The last two mornings I've had to jump start it; spanner light is on, and coil light. It's been OK for 2 years until this cold snap. I noticed last winter it was a poor starter in cold weather. I had the battery tested, and he said it was OK, along with the alternator. Just wondering what to do next?

Over the past several years, I have owned two Vauxhall Zafira cars, and they have both driven and behaved extremely well. Both vehicles were serviced by independent garages once a year prior to MOT. However I did add Cataclean fuel additive to my most recent car's fuel system, and noticed a distinct improved difference in its running. It was also added to my sons Mercedes A Class, and improved it considerably.

I noted from a previous comment the Zafira suffers from a sticking inlet valve, which could be the cause of a lot of the problems listed in these pages, as the electronic computer unit, while identifying problems, is not always specific to the fault, but identifies a component it affects.

Adding a good fuel cleaner could remove this from the equation, and to my surprise it was not very dear to buy or use. One bottle to quarter of a tank of fuel until the fuel is used up, then refill the tank and repeat in two years time if the car needs it. I found the fuel cleaner on E Bay from a UK supplier.

Hope it's as good for you as it was for me.

I've got a 2001 Zafira 1.8. The traction control warning light came on. No traction control, so lighting up the front wheels every time I pull away.

2 weeks later, the management light came on, code of p0100 given, mass airflow meter, rough tick over and hard brake pedal. New MAF fitted, tick over smoother, still no traction control, hard brake pedal and code of p0100 been shown on code reader.

All the local dealer wants to do is get it tech 2 with their "highly skilled engineer". After previous encounters with them, I'm loathed to spend best part of £100 for them to tell me it needs further investigation.

Have got a Zafira Elegance 1.8, 51 reg.

Started misfiring, along with lack of power, and engine management light on. Did some simple at home checks, and discovered that whilst the part of the exhaust manifold from cylinders 2 & 3 was hot, the outlet from number one was lukewarm, & the outlet from number 4 was cold, indicating faulty injectors. Got some from a scrap yard, fitted new fuel filter, problem cured.

Three weeks later, the car stopped and wouldn't start. Fuel pump failure. Got one from scrap, now the car runs a treat. Both times the EMU picked up faults, both times it was wrong.

Will be taking my Zaf to a stainless exhaust manufacturer to have a four branch exhaust manifold and separate cat fitted before the mani-cat collapses, as this causes problems with the EGR valve and cylinder head through poor exhaust ventilation. Hope this helps.

It could be cat lambda sensor or coil pack on top of spark plugs.

I had the same problem with a petrol one, please remove the filler cap and drive it without it. If this sorts the problem, drill a hole in the filler cap, this is due to a twisted breather pipe.
