1988 Volkswagen Fox GL Sport 1.8 from North America

Summary:

Best mileage and dependability of any car I've owned

Faults:

The rear main seal leaked onto the clutch.

Head gasket blew at 101,000 Miles.

Wiper switch went bad at 140,000.

General Comments:

I loved this car! I commute over 80 miles per day and was getting between 33 and 38 mpg.

Car had plenty of power on the Colorado mountains considering the size of power plant.

My biggest complaint is the drivers side wheel well footrest will put your foot to sleep.

I liked it so much we bought a new 2002 Jetta for my wife and I am buying a low miles Audi 4000 Quattro for my new commute of 120 Miles each way. Just figure the Audi will be more comfortable for the longer drive. My brother in law is the proud new owner of my Fox and he loves it also. I was never a foreign car lover until a friend talked me into this Fox after trying his 91 Fox.

1988 Volkswagen Fox 1.8 litre SOHC from North America

Summary:

A great car for the money

Faults:

I have had very limited and minor problems with this car in the eight months that I have had it. I had to replace the heater core when I first got it because it was cracked.

After that, I haven't had many other problems aside from the clutch cable breaking due to improper replacement procedures. The cable was kinked during installation by the local Volkswagen dealer.

General Comments:

I love my car more than almost every other one that I have owned. It has been very reliable and dependable and hasn't failed me even when I pushed the limits.

The extra low gearing in the transmission makes some serious torque for acceleration and pulling large loads. I have towed more than a couple cars out of ditches and mud with nothing more than my car and a chain.

The only complaint that I have is that the drivers seat is badly worn and at times, uncomfortable and the seal around the windshield leaks frequently when it rains.

1988 Volkswagen Fox GL 1.8L from North America

Summary:

What a ride!

Faults:

Had to replace belts, door latch on both rear doors, repainted 2x (thank goodness for tremclad spray-paint!), repacked rear bearings, shocks and struts needed a refit at 200,000.

General Comments:

Ah, yes, my little Fox - $500 as a present to myself on my 21st Birthday (my first car). I drove her for two and a half years - across the great country of Canada four times (to and from College) without even a hiccup that delayed my travels (other than nearly running out of gas in Northern Ontario). I wish that I had never let her go - a great investment and probably would have been worth maintaining into the 300km range. Not a peak of comfort, but a good little car for a first-time-owner and a great car to just run errands in and have fun while doing it.

1988 Volkswagen Fox GL 1.8L from North America

Summary:

One of the best engineered and built autombiles!

Faults:

Fuel Pump went out @ 224,000. Stored for two years until it was replaced

General Comments:

This is the best car ever made. I love the way it just keeps going and going.

I have driven it across the country several times and I drive to oregon a lot and it just amazes me how well this auto has been built.

The handling isn't the best, neither is the comfort, but it is reliable, and the cheapest running I have ever seen. I get over 300+ miles per tank of gas!

Great car! Classic! I wish they would bring it back!
